Make an overlook part of your river-area plan
Boquillas Overlook gives views across the Rio Grande toward Boquillas village, the Sierra del Carmens and Boquillas Canyon. An exhibit explains how the river carved the canyon. It is a useful viewing stop when you want scenery without committing to a longer walk.
If a river trip is your main goal, make that a separate decision. NPS says river-trip options depend on river levels. Ask an outfitter about your route before building the trip around it.
Keep October's warmth in the plan
October is cooler than September's 86°F (30°C) average high at Panther Junction, but the lower desert and river areas are hotter than this headquarters station. The Chisos Mountains are cooler. Use the district forecast to decide how much walking fits your day.
Bring a layer for the cooler evening. Confirm camping or lodging before departure and check official conditions for your planned route.
Questions about October
Is October or November better for Big Bend?
October has fewer average visits, while November is cooler. Panther Junction's normal high drops from 80°F (27°C) to 69°F (21°C). Choose according to your activities rather than treating either month as best for every trip.
Can October weather tell me whether a river trip will run?
No. NPS says river-trip options depend on river levels. Check your route with an outfitter; monthly weather normals and park-wide visitation cannot establish river conditions.
