Try a short plant-identification walk
At Dugout Wells, the Chihuahuan Desert Nature Trail makes a half-mile (0.8 km) loop. Small signs identify desert plants along the way. The path is dirt and gravel and crosses small dry channels, so it is not a paved stroll.
This is a simple starting activity when you want a short walk rather than a long hiking day. Check the forecast and official conditions before choosing the rest of your route.
Plan your campsite around the night, not the high
February's 41°F (5°C) normal low is for Panther Junction. Winter cold spells can bring freezing weather, and the Chisos Mountains are cooler than the headquarters area. The lower river desert is hotter. Use NPS district weather guidance and the forecast to decide what to pack.
Confirm camping or lodging before departure. If you need electricity, showers or a particular site type, check those facilities directly with the operator; the park's monthly climate and visit figures cannot verify them.
