Big Bend National Park crowds by month.

By Nicholas Major · Last updated

Big Bend National Park crowds peak in March, with 93,143 average recreation visits. August has the fewest at 16,691, or 18% of the peak. Summer heat can make outdoor recreation unsafe, so the quietest month is not automatically the right choice.

Reading the shape of the year.

March stands above the other months. April follows at 71% of the peak. February averages 48,002 visits compared with March's 93,143. A flexible traveler can use that difference to compare dates.

Visits fall through summer, then rebuild in autumn. September averages 26% of the peak, October 51%, and November 63%. The busiest month has 5.6 times the visits of the quietest.

These counts do not locate the crowds. A park-wide monthly total cannot tell you whether a particular trailhead has parking or a campground has space. Confirm bookings separately and use the official conditions pointer for current restrictions.

Compare months below the peak

January, February, May, and October average 30% to under 60% of the peak month's visits. This group describes visit counts, not equally suitable weather or road access; use the best-time guide to choose a season. For the full "so when should I actually go?" verdict, which weighs crowds against weather and road access, see the Big Bend best-time-to-visit page.

What these numbers measure

The chart averages each calendar month's recreation visits for 2021–2025 from the NPS Visitor Use Statistics Data Package, 2025. Each percentage divides that mean by this park's highest monthly mean. Visits are not unique people.

The data does not separate spring break, holiday weekends, individual trails or times of day. It is a month-to-month comparison, not a crowd forecast. We are independent of the National Park Service.

Common questions.

When is Big Bend National Park busiest?

March has the highest average monthly visitation: 93,143 recreation visits across 2021–2025. This does not identify the busiest week within that month.

How crowded is Big Bend during spring break?

The monthly figures cannot isolate spring-break dates. March is the highest-count month, but the dataset does not measure school-holiday weeks separately. Confirm camping or lodging availability before fixing your plans.

Which month is best to visit Big Bend?

Crowd counts alone cannot answer that. August has the fewest visits, but summer heat can make outdoor recreation unsafe. Use the best-time guide to compare weather with visits.
