Let heat change the day's plan

NPS advises avoiding hiking during summer's midday heat. Carry water and sun protection, and check the forecast before setting out. A monthly average is not a ceiling on the temperature you may encounter.

Panther Junction's normal low is 62°F (17°C). The Chisos Mountains are cooler than this station, but that does not establish safe conditions or access on a particular mountain route. Check district weather and official conditions separately.

Choose a viewpoint when a hike does not fit

At Mule Ears Viewpoint on Ross Maxwell Scenic Drive, the peaks are visible from the parking area. That offers a scenic stop without committing to the longer trail.

A viewpoint still means time outside in the heat; shorten or change the stop if conditions do not suit you. Confirm camping or lodging before the drive, and make a flexible plan rather than trying to complete a fixed hiking list.
