Start with a short river-area walk
The Rio Grande Village Nature Trail is a 0.75-mile (1.2 km) loop. It begins with a boardwalk over a pond, then climbs around a small ridge for views of the river and mountains.
Use the forecast to choose your walking time. The lower river desert is hotter than Panther Junction; the Chisos Mountains are cooler. One station's December normal does not settle conditions on every route.
Bring a warm layer for the night sky
For a simple evening plan, NPS suggests finding a spot away from developed areas. Bring binoculars if you have them and a chair if you want to stay outside. Winter can bring freezing cold, so pack for the night rather than the afternoon high.
December dates do not guarantee a clear view. Check the forecast before committing to an evening outdoors.
Keep holiday bookings and route checks separate
Reserve or confirm your overnight stay directly; an average visit count does not establish campground or lodging availability. Check official conditions and service hours before setting out.
If your dates are flexible, January averages 50% of March's visits, compared with December's 63%. Use the local weather guidance for the district you plan to visit.
