Set your overnight plan before your hiking list
NPS advises reserving camping or lodging before the drive. During busy periods, popular areas and trailheads can have limited parking. Choose an alternative activity before you set out, rather than relying on one trailhead.
A monthly visit total cannot establish that a campsite, hotel room or parking space will be available. Check availability with the operator and current conditions with NPS.
Consider a short desert walk
Lower Burro Mesa Pouroff Trail is a 1-mile (1.6 km) round trip to a rock channel that is dry most of the year. NPS describes the walk as relatively flat and easy, though uneven steps lead into the wash.
Check the forecast before entering: NPS warns against being in this canyon during a storm. This is a walking option, not a promise of spare parking when other places are busy.
Pack for the district and the cooler night
The 74°F (23°C) average high describes Panther Junction. Lower desert and Rio Grande areas are hotter; the Chisos Mountains are cooler. Bring a layer for the 47°F (8°C) normal low and use NPS weather guidance for your chosen area.
Questions about March
Is March a good month for camping in Big Bend?
It can suit a trip with warmer days and cool nights, but arrange a campsite first. Panther Junction's normal low is 47°F (8°C); that station does not describe every campground. Confirm facilities and availability directly rather than assuming the monthly weather settles your camping plan.
Is Big Bend crowded during March spring break?
March has the highest average monthly visit count. NPS advises preparing for limited parking during busy periods, but the data cannot identify how crowded your specific spring-break dates will be. Keep an alternative itinerary.
