Check the crossing before choosing Santa Elena
The NPS Santa Elena Canyon trail page lists about 1.6 miles (2.6 km) round trip. Access requires crossing the bed of Terlingua Creek and climbing a short, steep bank.
The creek bed can be dry, muddy or flowing after rain. Ask park staff about trail conditions. NPS says not to cross deep, swift water; enjoy the canyon view instead and save the walk for safer conditions. April weather averages cannot settle that decision.
Use the forecast to set the length of your walk
Panther Junction's average high rises from 74°F (23°C) in March to 82°F (28°C) in April. The lower desert and Rio Grande are hotter than that station, while the Chisos Mountains are cooler. Check district weather guidance before choosing a route.
If long desert hikes are the priority, compare February's 66°F (19°C) normal high. For a fixed April trip, keep a shorter option available and confirm overnight arrangements before departure. Check official conditions for current route restrictions.

Panther Junction averages a 82°F (28°C) high. The lower desert and river areas are hotter, so this is not a park-wide temperature. Use the forecast for your travel dates rather than treating the monthly normal as a daily limit.

April's average recreation visits are 71% of March's across 2021–2025. That compares entire months, not a particular Easter or spring-break date, trailhead or campground.
