Crowd snapshot.
December runs about 19,000 recreation visits in the five-year mean — about 2% of July's peak. The first three weeks remain firmly off-season with empty trailheads on weekdays and light weekend traffic. The Christmas-to-New-Year holiday window is a noticeable bump as the regional market (Flathead Valley, Whitefish Mountain Resort skiers, Calgary visitors) treats Glacier as a winter destination; West Glacier and Whitefish lodging tightens for 7-10 days around the holidays before easing into January's off-season baseline. The Apgar Visitor Center desk runs winter hours through the month.

Weather snapshot.
The W Glacier NOAA station records a December high near 29.2°F — the year's coldest — and a low near 19.9°F. The monthly snowfall normal of 31 inches at the cooperative station ties January as the snowiest month of the year at the West Entrance; the high country accumulates materially more, and Lake McDonald begins to freeze across the head. Cold-pool inversions in the McDonald Creek and Middle Fork drainages push W Glacier overnight readings below zero on clear nights. Wind across US-2 and at the open Apgar plain is the principal underrated hazard. Daylight is the year's shortest, with usable photography light extending barely past 5 p.m. local time.

Going-to-the-Sun above Lake McDonald Lodge is closed for the winter — verify on the NPS Glacier hours page. Many Glacier Road and Two Medicine Road are closed to vehicles. The plowed corridor is still West Entrance through Apgar to Lake McDonald Lodge. Winter $25 vehicle entry fee per the NPS Glacier fees page. No in-park lodges operate in December; West Glacier, Whitefish, and Kalispell are the practical bases. Backcountry travelers must consult the Flathead Avalanche Center before any off-corridor day. Seasonal events.
December is the season's true winter-recreation start at Apgar. Cross-country ski and snowshoe trails along the Lake McDonald shoreline, the McDonald Creek riparian zone, and the closed-to-vehicles upper Going-to-the-Sun draw the season's small but committed crowd. Wintering wolves on the Middle Fork hold territory; bald eagles remain at McDonald Creek through the first two weeks for the tail of the salmon run. Bears are denned through the month. Lake McDonald freezes more deeply, with photographable ice patterns along the shore. Mountain goats descend to lower-elevation cliff bands along US-2; they are visible from the highway on the southern park boundary on cold mornings. New-moon-week dark-sky photography is very strong despite minimal daylight. Snowshoe-guided ranger walks at Apgar, when scheduled, anchor the first-time-winter program.
Audience verdict.
December serves the same audience as January with a holiday-week caveat: solitude-seekers, photographers (winter side-light on the Apgar Range and Lake McDonald is at its longest of any month), wildlife watchers focused on McDonald Creek eagles and mountain goats along US-2, cross-country skiers and snowshoers anchored on the McDonald corridor, and visitors who want to drive the plowed corridor at their own pace. The Christmas-to-New-Year window is the one local peak; visitors who want the deepest quiet should target the first three weeks. Families with kids on a winter-break trip can use the Apgar shoreline and an easy Lake McDonald snowshoe for an introductory winter day. Whitefish Mountain Resort is the regional downhill skiing pair; many December Glacier trips combine the two.
Methodology
Monthly recreation visits come from the official NPS Visitor Use Statistics Data Package, 2025 on NPS IRMA Stats; the statistic shown is Recreation Visits, the 5-year mean across 1979-2025. Climate normals come from NOAA NCEI's 1991-2020 U.S. Climate Normals at W Glacier, MT (station USC00248809, 3,148 ft elevation). The access score weights named park roads by route importance for typical wheeled-vehicle openings that month. Year-variable specifics — exact Going-to-the-Sun Road open/close dates, Many Glacier and Two Medicine Road dates, vehicle-reservation rules — drift year to year and are hedged in the editorial above; confirm current dates on the official NPS Glacier page before booking.
