Late summer is when the park's fall story starts. Because Indiana Dunes sits at the southern tip of Lake Michigan, southbound birds follow the north-south shoreline and get funneled here, and the park names the top of a sand dune as the place to watch hawks in migration. Along the shore, the open water and fifteen miles of beach pull in numbers that build into winter.
