Crowd snapshot.
May runs about 306,000 recreation visits in the five-year mean — roughly 42% of July's peak and a near-4× lift over April. The visitor mix shifts hard once the inner Teton Park Road reopens to cars May 1 (typical opening date; verify current status). Memorial Day weekend at month-end is the year's first true peak-density holiday; Jackson and in-park lodging tighten to near-sold-out, and the Jenny Lake, String Lake, and Taggart Lake parking lots see their first sustained mid-morning fills. The Jenny Lake Boating shuttle restarts mid-May. Weekday traffic through the first three weeks remains workable.

Weather snapshot.
The Moran 5WNW NOAA station records a May high near 56.4°F and a low near 30.5°F. May snowfall normals at the cooperative station are 2.9 inches, and the range above 8,000 ft sees materially more. Mid-month and late-month afternoons run warm in direct sun at the valley floor, and the snow line retreats through the lower elevations. Trails above 8,000 ft (Surprise Lake, Amphitheater Lake, Paintbrush Divide, the Cascade Canyon upper sections) remain patchy with snow into the first half of June. Lake ice on Jenny, String, and Phelps fully clears by late May in average years. Overnight readings drop below freezing through the front half of the month.

Access snapshot.
Inner Teton Park Road reopens to wheeled vehicles May 1 per the published window, weather permitting — verify current status on the NPS Grand Teton roads page. Moose-Wilson Road reopens mid-May based on conditions; the same page posts the current state. The US-89 / US-191 / US-26 through-corridor is open year-round. The Jenny Lake Boating shuttle 2026 season starts May 15 per the Jenny Lake Boating site. In-park lodges (Jackson Lake Lodge, Jenny Lake Lodge, Colter Bay Village, Signal Mountain Lodge) typically reopen for the summer season through the month via the Grand Teton Lodge Company and Signal Mountain Lodge. Bears are actively foraging — bear spray applies on every hike per the NPS Grand Teton safety page.

Seasonal events.
May is the bird-migration peak and the first reliable wildflower window in the valley. Sagebrush-zone bloomers (arrowleaf balsamroot, lupine, sticky geranium, larkspur) start through the second half of the month per NPS Grand Teton wildflowers guidance. Sandhill cranes pass through; hummingbirds and warblers fill the willow flats and Snake River corridor. Bears (both black and grizzly) are actively foraging on emerging vegetation and winter-kill carrion; the sage flats and meadow edges along the through-corridor are routine bear-sighting spots. Elk calves begin appearing in the last 10 days of the month. Moose feeding on willow regrowth are common along the Moose-Wilson corridor once it reopens. Trumpeter swans nest along the Buffalo Fork and Snake bottomlands.
Audience verdict.
May serves the broadest pre-summer audience at Grand Teton. Photographers gain wildflower foregrounds with snow-on-range backdrops; bird-watchers chase migration peak; hikers gain inner-park-road access without July's peak crowds; visitors anchored on lower-elevation valley trails benefit. The high-country alpine trails remain snowbound until June, so summit ambitions still need a winter-style plan. Memorial Day weekend is the one stretch to dodge if quieter conditions matter; the week before runs noticeably easier. RV travelers should book Colter Bay RV Park or one of the in-park campgrounds well ahead. Bear-safety planning is now non-negotiable on every hike.
Methodology
Monthly recreation visits come from the official NPS Visitor Use Statistics Data Package, 2025 on NPS IRMA Stats; the statistic shown is Recreation Visits, the 5-year mean across 1979-2025. Climate normals come from NOAA NCEI's 1991-2020 U.S. Climate Normals at Moran 5WNW HCN, WY (station USC00486440, 6,805 ft elevation). The access score weights named park roads by route importance for typical wheeled-vehicle openings that month. Year-variable specifics — exact inner Teton Park Road open/close dates, Moose-Wilson Road open/close dates, the Jenny Lake Boating shuttle season, in-park lodge operating windows — drift year to year and are hedged in the editorial above; confirm current dates on the official NPS Grand Teton page before booking.
