Trails above 8,000 ft (Surprise Lake, Amphitheater Lake, Paintbrush Divide, the Cascade Canyon upper sections) remain patchy with snow into the first half of June. Lake ice on Jenny, String, and Phelps fully clears by late May in average years. Overnight readings drop below freezing through the front half of the month.

May serves the broadest pre-summer audience at Grand Teton. Photographers gain wildflower foregrounds with snow-on-range backdrops; bird-watchers chase migration peak; hikers gain inner-park-road access without July's peak crowds; visitors anchored on lower-elevation valley trails benefit. The high-country alpine trails remain snowbound until June, so summit ambitions still need a winter-style plan. Memorial Day weekend is the one stretch to dodge if quieter conditions matter; the week before runs noticeably easier.
