The Elwha NOAA station records a May high near 63.4°F and a low near 43.2°F. Rainfall normals are 1.91 inches — the first month with summer-pattern dryness at the gateway elevation. The Hoh and Quinault rainforest valleys remain wetter but begin to dry into the early-summer pattern. Hurricane Ridge at 5,242 ft retains substantial alpine snow through the month; the subalpine wildflower bloom does not begin until late May and into June. Daytime sun is strong on dry windows. Coastal storm cycles end; ocean conditions transition into the summer marine pattern.

May is the spring migration peak and the start of subalpine wildflower season at Hurricane Ridge. Gray whale migration continues at the coast; tufted puffins and other seabirds return to nesting colonies on the coastal sea stacks. Bald eagles work the salmon-stream corridors. Wildflower season at Hurricane Ridge begins late month with avalanche lily, glacier lily, and the first paintbrush emerging from melting snowpack. The Hoh and Quinault valleys are in late spring leaf-out and the river-corridor songbird chorus is at full activity. Coastal tide windows begin to produce the year's best low-tide sea-stack viewing windows.

Audience verdict.

May serves the broadest pre-summer audience across all three landscapes. Photographers chase the gray-whale migration tail and the first wildflowers at Hurricane Ridge; bird-watchers track late migration and breeding-season arrivals; rainforest hikers gain the cleanest light of the year on bright dry windows. The Memorial Day weekend is the one stretch to dodge if quieter conditions matter; the week before runs noticeably easier. RV travelers gain Kalaloch and Mora reservations starting May 15 and Sol Duc Hot Springs Resort enters its summer season May 21.
