The Elwha station records a May high near 63.4°F and a low near 43.2°F at about 360 ft, with 1.91 inches of rain and no snow. That is the first month with a summer-dry reading, and it belongs to the rain shadow: the Hoh averages 140 inches of precipitation a year and stays wetter. Hurricane Ridge keeps snow on much of the subalpine terrain through May, so plan ridge walks around what has melted out rather than what is on the map. NPS notes the shift out of the October-to-May reduced-operations window this month.

Hurricane Ridge Road is open through the summer (NPS Hurricane Ridge page). From May until September 1, Clallam Transit runs shuttles from downtown Port Angeles to Hurricane Ridge, first bus out at 8 a.m. and last bus down at 5:30 p.m. (NPS directions page). Obstruction Point Road opens mid-June, snow permitting. Kalaloch and Mora reservations run May 15 to September 20, 2026, and Fairholme May 15 to September 29. Hoh reservations start June 12 (NPS camping page). Log Cabin Resort opens May 15 and runs to September 29, 2026 (NPS lodging page). The private-vehicle pass is $30 for seven consecutive days. Seasonal events.

May is when the rainforest, the coast and the ridge all become workable in the same trip. Coastal minus tides open up the best tidepooling of the year at Kalaloch's Beach 4 and Mora's Hole in the Wall. Aim for a tide below one foot and arrive at Hole in the Wall at least half an hour before the lowest tide, allowing an hour for the 1.5-mile walk from Rialto Beach. The Hoh is in full leaf. Roosevelt elk stay in the Hoh area all year, so a dawn drive up the Upper Hoh Road is worthwhile. Keep 100 feet away.

Audience verdict.

May is the broadest pre-summer month. Hikers get the valleys and the lower ridge, tidepoolers get the spring minus tides, and anyone who wants three landscapes in one trip finally can. The shuttle from Port Angeles removes the Hurricane Ridge parking problem for anyone without a car or willing to leave it behind. Memorial Day weekend is the one busy stretch, and the week before it is the sweet spot. Book Kalaloch, Mora or Fairholme the day reservations open on May 15 if you want a coastal site. Subalpine trails are still partly snow-covered.
