Getting around in spring

Check the seasonal access and equipment decisions before fixing the route.

Do not rely on the full Sun Road

Plowing and road access need a separate check. A partial opening does not provide a cross-park drive.

Separate road and trail access

A drivable road does not establish snow-free hiking above it. Choose a lower outing after checking the trail report.

Things to do in spring

Choose a lower-elevation or high-country outing for the actual conditions.

Lake McDonald shore

Use a lower-elevation lake outing as an alternative to assuming alpine trail access.

Lower park-edge walks

Choose a trail for its actual condition. Mid- and high-elevation routes can remain completely snow-covered.

Permitted road walking or cycling

Use a seasonal hiker/biker opportunity only where NPS permits it; plowing and road work can limit access.

Get oriented for spring

Choose a west-side, east-side or Many Glacier base before booking. A cross-park drive needs its own access check.

Where to stay in spring

Match the lodge or gateway base to the park side and season of your trip.

  • Lake McDonald Lodge

A west-side seasonal lodge, generally May–September. Verify the property’s actual dates before booking.

  • Gateway lodging

Use a confirmed outside-park room before or after the lodge season. Match its side of the park to your main route.

Camping Use the park’s campground guidance for operating and booking dates. A lodge season or road opening does not establish campground availability.
