Before you set up the camera
Keep the camera plan within the park’s access, wildlife and filming rules.
Fern Canyon is a wet walk
Plan to wade and climb over fallen trees even when seasonal footbridges are installed. Pets are not permitted in the canyon, with service animals excepted.
Ask the correct land manager
Redwood National and State Parks are jointly managed. The park lists photography among special uses that need permit review; ask how your shoot fits the park and state-land rules. The NPS-wide small-group rule is conditional and does not remove other activity authorizations.
Drones and winter crossings
NPS-wide guidance generally prohibits launching or landing drones in national parks; check the applicable state-park rules too. Redwood Creek runs high in winter and its footbridges are removed until summer.
Conditional NPS small-group rule
The NPS-wide exemption for eight or fewer people requires public-open areas, hand-carried equipment, no exclusive use, no adverse impacts on park resources, values or other visitors and no likely added NPS administrative costs. Filming or photography associated with an activity or event authorized under a written permit or agreement needs no separate camera permit or camera-permit fees. Applicable entrance and recreation fees and other activity authorizations still apply; commercial and personal recording are treated alike. Confirm how these NPS rules apply to the land you will use.
Driving to Fern Canyon
The dedicated reservation page takes precedence over contradictory date boxes on other NPS pages. Davison Road has stream crossings, excludes trailers and is unsuitable for large RVs; low-clearance cars can get stuck. The James Irvine Trail is a much longer hiking alternative, about 10.4 miles round trip from Prairie Creek Visitor Center.

Do I need a reservation to drive to Fern Canyon?
The dedicated NPS reservation page governs the seasonal Gold Bluffs Beach and Fern Canyon driving requirement. Other NPS pages contain conflicting date ranges, so use that booking page before driving. Reservations and day-use fees are separate; check vehicle restrictions and stream crossings on Davison Road.
