Zion National Park road closures follow two different patterns. Zion Canyon Scenic Drive is normally shuttle-only from March through November and during some holiday service; private cars use it in the non-shuttle season. Upper Kolob Terrace Road and Lava Point Road close for snow. SR-9 and Kolob Canyons Road have no fixed closing season, but storms can interrupt access. SR-9 crosses the park between the South and East Entrances; Zion Canyon Scenic Drive branches north at Canyon Junction. Kolob Terrace starts at Virgin, while Kolob Canyons is a separate drive from I-15 Exit 40.
These are normal access patterns, not fixed opening dates. The Scenic Drive window is for private cars; holiday shuttle service can interrupt that winter window.

Plan around the normal winter road pattern, then check official conditions before driving.
Private vehicles normally use Zion Canyon Scenic Drive in the non-shuttle season, usually December through February. Service usually runs daily March through November and for the holiday period near the end of December. Check the posted schedule rather than assuming all winter dates permit driving. During shuttle season, private cars cannot use the Scenic Drive before the first bus or after the last. No ticket or reservation is needed for the free shuttle. Zion Lodge guests may drive only to designated guest parking using their reservation access code; Canyon Trail Rides guests have designated parking access with their reservation. The snow closure on Kolob Terrace normally lasts several months, beginning at Maloney Hill about one mile past Hop Valley Trailhead. Lava Point Road branches from that road and normally closes from fall into spring. A clear road in Zion Canyon does not establish access up here. Check NPS alerts.
SR-9 normally stays available to vehicles within its size limits even while the canyon shuttle runs. Kolob Canyons has no fixed winter closing season, but NPS warns of frequent winter closures. Its hours page calls it year-round; the conditions page qualifies that with weather closures. NPS operating seasons and road conditions.
Nearly half of Zion Canyon's annual precipitation falls from December through March. Driving can be very poor during storms; NPS says roads are usually plowed quickly afterward. This road starts north of Canyon Junction and reaches Zion Lodge and Temple of Sinawava.
Temple of Sinawava is the Scenic Drive stop for Riverside Walk and the bottom-up Narrows approach; road or shuttle access does not establish trail access.
The drive climbs from Virgin toward the upper plateau.
This is a branch from Kolob Terrace Road, not a separate approach from I-15.
The size limits apply to the whole Canyon Junction to East Entrance section, not only the tunnel.
Exceeding any limit means choosing another route. An old tunnel-permit description does not override these limits.
This separate scenic drive starts at the visitor center near I-15 Exit 40.
An oversized vehicle cannot cross the Zion-Mount Carmel Highway. Limited South Entrance access for parking, lodging and camping does not authorize passage beyond Canyon Junction.
NPS lists the large-vehicle lot by Zion Canyon Visitor Center, if space is available; Zion Lodge with a valid reservation; the Scenic Drive in the shuttle off-season; and Watchman or South Campground when operating. These exceptions are for South Entrance access. An oversized vehicle arriving at the South or East Entrance otherwise receives turnaround instructions. NPS large-vehicle access.
NPS identifies Highway 20 north of Cedar City, roughly 150 miles and 2.5 hours. Its comparison is 63 miles longer and about 42 minutes slower than the route through Zion, where speeds are usually under 30 mph. These are planning estimates, not a traffic prediction.
NPS identifies Highway 59 toward Jacob Lake, roughly 128 miles and just over 3 hours. Its comparison is 23 miles longer and about 10 minutes more. Check the destination's seasonal road access separately.
Utah DOT states that tunnel permits are no longer available after June 7, 2026. Its Zion road information page supplies an SR-9 status feed and camera links. For other Utah roads use UDOT Traffic or 866-511-8824.
Normal road seasons and monthly park visitation answer different questions. Neither predicts access on a particular day.
In historical NPS monthly park visits, January averages 23%, February averages 25%, December averages 36%, March averages 68%, November averages 50% of June, the busiest month. These are park visits, not vehicle or road counts. January and February are normally quieter months for a canyon drive, with winter weather a trade-off. The Zion-Mount Carmel Highway normally crosses the park between the South and East Entrances, including during canyon shuttle service, if your vehicle meets all size and weight limits. Zion Canyon Scenic Drive is restricted during shuttle season. Weather, rockfall and traffic can close roads, so check NPS closure alerts for today's access.
NPS describes Zion as open 24 hours a day, all year. Individual roads have different access rules. During shuttle season, private cars cannot use Zion Canyon Scenic Drive before the first bus or after the last. Reservation access for designated Zion Lodge and Canyon Trail Rides parking, and special medical permits, are limited exceptions described on the NPS shuttle page.
The September 2025 NPS contingency plan said roads, lookouts, trails and open-air memorials would generally remain accessible during a funding lapse, but regular road and trail condition updates would stop. It also required closing an area when access created a safety, health or resource-protection issue, including weather and road hazards. That plan does not guarantee access during a future shutdown; check official instructions before travelling.
