Choose the walk after checking wind and heat
NPS describes strong windstorms as a common spring pattern. Blowing sand can impair visibility. Check the forecast and official trail and road information before committing to a route.
At the visitor center, ask a ranger which trail fits your experience and the conditions. NPS recommends learning your trail's marker color and symbol before starting. It also advises against beginning a hike at or above 85°F (30°C). A cooler temperature alone does not establish safe conditions.
Keep the visitor center in your plan
The visitor center's museum exhibits and orientation film offer a way to learn about White Sands if your outdoor plan needs to shrink. Check the facility's hours and film availability before relying on that option.
Fill water containers there before heading into the dunes; NPS says there is no water in the dunefield. Pack a warm layer for the 33°F (1°C) normal low. Confirm park hours and missile-test closures before traveling, particularly when fitting the visit between other spring-break stops.
Questions about March
Is March a good time to visit White Sands National Park?
It can be good for dune walks, with a normal 71°F (22°C) high, but spring wind and the peak monthly visit count are tradeoffs. Use the forecast and official access information to choose your outing rather than assuming mild averages guarantee good walking conditions.
Which week in March is quietest at White Sands?
The monthly NPS data cannot rank individual March weeks or arrival times. March has the highest average monthly count in the five-year series. If your dates are flexible, compare other months in the crowd calendar; a specific holiday week still needs separate planning.
