Try Dune Life Nature Trail if the conditions fit
The Dune Life Nature Trail is a one-mile (1.6 km) loop, rated moderate by NPS. It crosses soft sand and climbs two steep dunes, so choose it for a sand hike rather than a level stroll. Trailside signs introduce the animals that live here.
Check official access information before setting out. Fill water containers at the visitor center; NPS says there is no water in the dunefield.
Let visibility decide how far you walk
NPS warns that blowing sand can reduce visibility. On Dune Life Nature Trail, look for the next blue marker with a club symbol before continuing. If you cannot see it, NPS says to return to your car.
February's 27°F (-3°C) normal low still calls for warm clothing. Occasional winter storms bring rain and limited snow. Check the forecast and park hours and missile-test closures before traveling; a low visit count cannot tell you whether a particular day suits a dune walk.
