In short

The busiest month averages 2.4 times the visits of the quietest. These park-wide counts compare months; they cannot tell you which dunes will be empty, how long an entrance line will be, or whether a holiday will be busy.

Reading the shape of the year.

March stands above the rest of the year. April follows at 78% of the peak, then May at 71%. Do not treat all spring months as equally busy.

Lower counts occur in several seasons. January averages 43% of the peak, August 47%, and November 52%. Those similar shares do not make the months interchangeable for an outdoor trip. The best-time guide covers their seasonal tradeoffs.

Quiet hours and camping availability are separate questions. Monthly totals do not establish a sunset crowd pattern or an overnight option. Check official hours and park information for your date; seasonal hours and missile-test closures can affect access.

Compare months below the spring peak

January, February, August, September, October, November, and December average 30% to under 60% of the peak. This is a visit-count grouping, not a weather recommendation or a forecast for a particular weekend. For the full "so when should I actually go?" verdict, which weighs crowds against weather and road access, see the White Sands best-time-to-visit page.

What these numbers measure

Each figure is the mean recreation visits for that calendar month across 2021–2025, from the NPS Visitor Use Statistics Data Package, 2025. Each percentage divides that mean by this park's highest monthly mean. Visits are not unique people.

The data does not separate holiday weekends, entrance waits, sunset visits or individual trails. It describes historical monthly counts, not current crowd levels. We are independent of the National Park Service.

Common questions.

When is White Sands least crowded?

February has the fewest average recreation visits, 41,885, or 42% of the March peak. January's 42,273 is similar. These counts do not promise solitude on a particular day or trail.

Is spring break crowded at White Sands?

March is the busiest month in the 2021–2025 averages, but monthly totals cannot isolate a spring-break week. They show a high-count month, not the size of the queue on your travel date.

What time should I arrive to avoid crowds?

This dataset cannot identify a quiet hour or predict sunset crowds. Check official operating hours and any access notices before setting out. Use the chart to compare months, not to choose a precise arrival time.
