Every Sequoia road on one timeline.

Sequoia and Kings Canyon publish rules, not calendars. The road information page says a road opens, for example, on the Wednesday before Memorial Day, and the dates below are what those rules give in 2026. The park calls them general, and weather moves them. Its pages don't quite agree on Cedar Grove: the road information page says Highway 180 generally opens the fourth Friday in April, the road conditions table says late April or early May, and the conditions page says Cedar Grove is typically open from May through early to mid-November. The Mineral King Road closing, October 28, 2026, is a published date.

The roads open all year.

The Generals Highway from the Ash Mountain Entrance, near Three Rivers, to Lodgepole is the park's main road, and it's open all year. NPS says it closes occasionally during and after snowstorms for plowing or to clear debris, and that tire chains are often required in winter. South Fork Road is typically open year-round too. It's unpaved past the park entrance, can be rough, and gets slippery in rain or snow. South Fork Campground, at its end, is closed.

Two roads near Giant Forest work differently in winter. Once snow makes Wolverton Road impassable, it's plowed Friday through Sunday, Wednesdays, and holidays so you can reach the snowplay area at its end. Moro Rock-Crescent Meadow Road isn't cleared of snow, and when it's closed to cars it's open for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. Our Sequoia in winter page covers the rest of a winter trip.

2026: Mineral King roadwork.

Mineral King Road has construction from September 8 to October 28, 2026, on a tentative schedule. Monday through Thursday, expect up to 30-minute delays from 7 am to 10 am, a full closure from 10 am to 4 pm, and up to 30-minute delays again from 4 pm to 7 pm. Friday through Sunday, there are no delays from 7 am to 8 am, then the road is closed from 8 am to 7 pm, with pass-throughs at 10 am, 1 pm, and 4 pm. Be at a closure point at one of those times to be sure of getting through. There are no closures or delays before 7 am or after 7 pm, or from noon on Friday, October 9, to 7 am on Tuesday, October 13.

The work is only in the Mineral King area, so it doesn't affect the main entrance near Three Rivers. Mineral King Road then closes for the winter on October 28, 2026. It's very narrow and curving, partly unpaved up high, and RVs and trailers aren't recommended, nor allowed in its campgrounds. Elsewhere, Middle Fork Road to Buckeye Flat is open only to people on foot. Crystal Cave Road opens only on days with cave tours, and NPS says tours have ended for the 2026 season and are expected to begin again in late spring 2027. The free park shuttles that carry summer weekend traffic on Moro Rock-Crescent Meadow Road ran May 22 through September 7 in 2026.

Winter: chains and the road to Kings Canyon.

The Generals Highway between Lodgepole and Grant Grove is the link between Sequoia and Kings Canyon. It's open unless weather makes it impassable, except for a few months in winter: from the Friday after January 1 to the third Friday in March, it's unplowed and often closes due to snow. Closures start just north of Wuksachi Lodge and end at a gate near the Highway 180 junction by Grant Grove. In winter you may not be able to drive between the parks without going back down to the foothills, and NPS says Highway 245, west of the parks, is often used instead. Even in spring, the highway from Wuksachi Lodge to Montecito Sequoia Lodge can close for a while during snowstorms.

Tire chains may be required on park roads any time it snows, usually late fall, winter, and through spring, and chain advisories can change several times a day. Vehicles without proper traction devices may not be allowed on some roads, or into the parks at all. Whenever any chain requirement is in effect, every vehicle in a chain control zone, four-wheel and all-wheel drive included, must carry chains or cables, and the speed limit is 25 mph.

In Kings Canyon, Highway 180 to Cedar Grove closes for the season. Caltrans gates it just past the Hume Lake Road junction, 6 miles northeast of Grant Grove Village, because rockfall from the cliffs is common once nights drop below freezing. Hume Lake stays reachable all year.

How crowds follow the openings.

Sequoia's crowd grows as the roads open. March, when the Generals Highway north of Lodgepole is unplowed until the third Friday, averages 29% of the visits of July, the busiest month. April, when Highway 180 to Cedar Grove generally opens, is 42%. May, with Mineral King and Moro Rock-Crescent Meadow roads opening the week before Memorial Day, is 62%.

Fall is gentler. September averages 63% of July and October 48%, with Mineral King Road closing October 28 in 2026. November, when Highway 180 to Cedar Grove closes in mid-November, is 31%. NPS says long lines have formed at the entrance stations on Fridays, Saturdays, and holidays from Memorial Day to Labor Day, with waits over an hour on the busiest days. Long vehicles, gas, and narrow roads.

The Generals Highway between Hospital Rock and the Giant Forest Museum is very curvy and narrow, with many hairpin turns. NPS advises against vehicles 22 feet and over from Potwisha Campground to the Giant Forest Museum, and suggests the Big Stump Entrance on Highway 180 instead. In Kings Canyon, Panoramic Point Road is narrow and closed to RVs and trailers. North Fork Road is unpaved, with deep, wide ruts near the trailhead, so NPS strongly recommends high-clearance vehicles.

Fill up before you come. There are no gas stations or electric vehicle charging stations in either park. The nearest gas is in the neighboring national forest, at Hume Lake, open year-round, and Stony Creek Resort, open summer only. Our Sequoia camping page lists campground RV limits.

Common questions.

Is Sequoia National Park open today?

Its main road is. The Generals Highway from the Ash Mountain Entrance to Lodgepole is open all year, though it closes at times during and after snowstorms. Mineral King Road, Crystal Cave Road, and Highway 180 to Cedar Grove in Kings Canyon close for the season, and in 2026 Mineral King Road closes October 28. Can you drive from Sequoia to Kings Canyon in winter?

Sometimes. The Generals Highway between Lodgepole and Grant Grove is unplowed and often closed from the Friday after January 1 to the third Friday in March. Check the NPS road conditions page before you plan both parks in one winter day.

Do you need chains in Sequoia National Park?

Carry them from late fall through spring. Chains may be required any time it snows, and whenever a chain requirement is in effect, every vehicle in the zone, including four-wheel and all-wheel drive, must carry chains or cables. The park posts an alert whenever chains are required, and vehicles without traction devices may be turned away from some roads.

Does a government shutdown close Sequoia's roads?

Generally, no. The current National Park Service contingency plan says park roads, lookouts, trails, and open-air memorials will generally remain accessible to visitors during a lapse in appropriations. It also says parks will not provide regular road or trail condition updates, and that an area must be closed if access becomes a safety issue, such as weather or road conditions. In a winter storm, the recorded road line and chain alerts may not keep up.
