Which airport for Sequoia?

NPS names two closest commercial airports for Sequoia and Kings Canyon: Fresno Yosemite International and Visalia Municipal. OurAirports lists no scheduled airline service at Visalia, so we compare Fresno with Bakersfield, which NPS doesn't name but which lists nonstop flights. Pick by entrance. The Ash Mountain Entrance on Highway 198, past Three Rivers, is the way into Sequoia National Park. The Big Stump Entrance on Highway 180 is the way into Kings Canyon National Park, and the Generals Highway links the two parks. NPS says Highway 180 is the preferred route for longer vehicles, because it's straighter, less steep and wider. Mineral King has its own road from Three Rivers, two miles before the Ash Mountain Entrance, and only trails connect it with the rest of Sequoia.

Every airport-to-entrance drive.

Every airport-to-entrance drive we route. Fresno gets two rows, one for each entrance. NPS says the parks are open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, though winter storms occasionally close some park roads until they can be plowed. No roads cross the mountains west to east through the parks, so every drive comes in from the San Joaquin Valley side.

Fresno is the closer airport for both entrances: 51 miles (1 h 11 min) to Big Stump and 79 miles (1 h 47 min) to Ash Mountain. NPS's own estimates from the airport are 1¼ hours to the Kings Canyon entrance and 1¾ hours to the Sequoia entrance. Bakersfield is 90 miles to Ash Mountain, 16 min longer than from Fresno. Driving an RV or a long van? NPS advises against vehicles longer than 24 feet between the Foothills Visitor Center and Potwisha Campground, and longer than 22 feet between Potwisha and the Giant Forest Museum. Use the Big Stump Entrance instead, which makes Fresno the easier airport for a big rig.

Match the entrance to the season.

All year: both entrances are open. The Generals Highway from Ash Mountain up to Lodgepole stays open, though NPS says it closes occasionally during and after snowstorms for plowing or removal of debris.

Early January to mid-March: NPS says the Generals Highway between Lodgepole and Grant Grove is unplowed and often closes due to snow from the Friday after January 1 to the third Friday in March, and that in winter, passage to Kings Canyon may be unavailable. So pick the entrance for the park you want most: Big Stump for Grant Grove, Ash Mountain for the Giant Forest. If the highway between the parks is open, NPS says to allow at least 2 to 3 hours between entrance stations.

Late April to mid-November: the Kings Canyon Scenic Byway from Grant Grove to Cedar Grove is open, generally from the fourth Friday in April to mid-November. Fresno to Big Stump is the way to start that drive.

Fresno, Bakersfield, or a bigger airport?

We don't publish fares. What sets them is how many nonstop routes an airport has, and whether your trip needs a connection. Fresno's list has 15 nonstop destinations, including Chicago, Denver, Seattle and three cities in Mexico, and some routes are seasonal. Bakersfield lists United to San Francisco, Denver and Los Angeles, and American to Phoenix and Dallas.

For most trips Fresno is the first airport to check. It's closer to both entrances, and the V-Line bus links it with Visalia. NPS says many other airports, some international, are within a few hours' drive of the parks. Bigger airports mean more flights and a longer drive. We don't route them, so we don't give their distances.

Adding Yosemite? Fresno's airport calls itself the closest commercial airport to Yosemite, Sequoia and Kings Canyon. By our routing it's 62 miles from Yosemite's South Entrance.

Rental cars, buses, and getting around.

NPS says you can rent a car at Fresno's airport to reach the parks. Fill the tank before you drive in: there are no gas stations or chargers within the park boundaries, only limited, seasonal stations on nearby national forest land.

No car? The City of Visalia's V-Line bus runs between Fresno Yosemite International Airport and the Visalia Transit Center, with stops at Fresno State and Visalia Municipal Airport. In summer it connects with the Sequoia Shuttle, which leaves from Visalia, Lemon Cove or Three Rivers for $15 round trip, per its operator. Reservations must be made 90 minutes in advance. Its season runs from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day, so the 2026 shuttle ended on September 7. Tulare County Area Transit also runs from the Visalia Transit Center to Three Rivers, and outside the shuttle season NPS suggests renting a vehicle.

Greyhound stops at the Visalia Transit Center and the Fresno Greyhound Station. The nearest Amtrak stations are in Hanford and Fresno, and from Hanford, Amtrak has bus connections to the Visalia Transit Center.

Watch your GPS. NPS says online maps and GPS devices may route you around the entrance stations onto remote roads that could leave you stuck with a damaged vehicle. Use Highway 198 for Sequoia and Highway 180 for Kings Canyon, and turn off the "avoid tolls" setting in your map app.

Is Visalia Municipal Airport closer to Sequoia?

On the map, yes, and NPS puts it 1 hour from the Sequoia entrance on Highway 198. But OurAirports lists no scheduled airline service at Visalia, and we couldn't reach the city's airport page to confirm any, so we don't route it. Check with an airline before you plan on it. The V-Line bus does stop there on its way between Fresno's airport and Visalia.

What major city is closest to Sequoia National Park?

Of the cities with scheduled airline service, Fresno. Its airport is 79 road miles from the Ash Mountain Entrance and 51 from Big Stump. Visalia, where the summer Sequoia Shuttle starts, is closer to the Sequoia entrance, but OurAirports lists no scheduled airline service at its airport.

How far apart are Sequoia and Yosemite?

We don't route park to park, but Fresno's airport sits between them. It's 51 road miles to the Big Stump Entrance and 62 miles to Yosemite's South Entrance, so one airport works for both parks.
