Which airport for Rocky Mountain?

NPS names one airport for Rocky Mountain: Denver International, the closest major airport. We added Colorado Springs and Grand Junction, which NPS doesn't name, because they have scheduled airline service and are a realistic drive. Pick by side first. The park has two gateway towns, Estes Park on the east and Grand Lake on the west. The Beaver Meadows and Fall River entrances are by Estes Park, and the Grand Lake Entrance is on the west side. Trail Ridge Road links the two sides inside the park, but NPS says it's closed from approximately mid-October through late May. How that road works is on our Trail Ridge Road page.

Every airport-to-entrance drive.

Every airport-to-entrance drive we route. Denver gets two rows, one for each side of the park. NPS says the park is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, weather permitting. The Denver to Grand Lake row goes around the park on I-70 and US-40 through Granby, not over Trail Ridge Road, and NPS says US-40 on that route can close or have restrictions due to snow in winter.

Denver is the closer airport for both sides: 79 miles (1 h 51 min) to Beaver Meadows, and 126 miles (3 h 8 min) to Grand Lake. Grand Junction is 211 miles (4 h 36 min) to Grand Lake, coming in from the west through Kremmling, so it only makes sense if its flights suit you better. Colorado Springs is 143 miles to Beaver Meadows, 64 miles and 1 h 22 min farther than Denver. NPS measures from Denver itself, 66 miles via Boulder and US 36, 1.5 to 2 hours. Our figure starts at the airport, which is why it's longer. For Grand Lake, NPS gives 61 miles (1.5 to 2 hours) from I-70 west of Denver on US 40 through Granby, and 42 miles from Kremmling.

Match the airport to the season.

Late May to mid-October: NPS says Trail Ridge Road normally opens to through travel in the last week of May and closes in mid-October, weather permitting. That makes a one-airport trip across the park easy: land in Denver, go in at Beaver Meadows, and cross to Grand Lake. Trail Ridge Road runs 41 miles (1 h 22 min) from the Fall River Entrance to the Grand Lake Entrance by our routing.

Mid-October to late May: you can't drive between the two sides inside the park. For Grand Lake, take I-70 and US-40 from Denver, 126 miles, or fly to Grand Junction. NPS says US-40 can close or have restrictions due to snow in winter. When the Colorado Vehicle Traction Law is active in the park, every vehicle needs properly rated tires with at least 3/16-inch tread, or an approved traction device such as chains. Ask the rental company what tires the car has.

Denver, Colorado Springs, or Grand Junction?

We don't publish fares, and we couldn't load airline lists from any of the three airports' own sites, so we don't print route counts. NPS calls Denver the closest major airport. For most trips it's the first one to check: it's the shortest drive to either side, and the Estes Park Shuttle runs from it.

Colorado Springs adds 64 miles and 1 h 22 min of driving to Beaver Meadows. It's worth it only if the flight is much better or your trip includes Colorado Springs. Grand Junction comes into the west side from the west, but at 211 miles it's the longest drive of the three.

You don't have to fly in and out of the same airport. Between late May and mid-October, Denver in and Grand Junction out, or the reverse, crosses the park on Trail Ridge Road with no backtracking. Check the one-way rental fee before you decide.

Shuttles, the Bustang, and getting around.

NPS says there's no public transportation from Denver International Airport to the park, and that commercial shuttle service runs from the airport to Estes Park. Estes Park Shuttle runs daily scheduled service between the airport and the Estes Valley, and picks up outside door 513 at baggage claim, on the east side at Island 1. On September 11, 2026 its site listed $85 one way or $155 round trip at peak times, and $100 one way at non-peak times, with no round trip. It doesn't define the peak periods, so ask when you book. Cancellations are refundable only with three full days' notice.

Once you're in Estes Park, the park's Hiker Shuttle runs in summer to the Park & Ride Transit Hub, with reservations required. CDOT's Bustang also offers limited service from Denver to Park & Ride, reservations required. NPS hasn't posted a current Bustang schedule: its directions page, last updated May 24, 2023, still shows the 2023 season. On that schedule, riders boarded at Denver Union Station and at stops along US 36, not at the airport, and needed a park entrance pass as well as a bus ticket. Headed to Grand Lake without a car? NPS says there's no public transportation from Granby or Winter Park to the park, though Greyhound serves Granby and the Denver area. Plan on a rental car for the west side.
