Which airport for Mount Rainier?

NPS names three airports served by major airlines near Mount Rainier: Seattle-Tacoma, Portland and Yakima. It measures each one to Ashford, the town just outside the Nisqually Entrance: 85 miles from Seattle, 131 from Portland and 134 from Yakima. The park has five entrances, and the one you use matters more than the airport. NPS says year-round access is via SR 706 to the Nisqually Entrance in the southwest corner. Stevens Canyon in the southeast and White River in the northeast are seasonal. Carbon River and Mowich Lake in the northwest have no public access from SR 165: NPS says the bridge is closed to pedestrians, bicycles and vehicles, and there is no alternate route.

Every airport-to-entrance drive.

Every airport-to-entrance drive we route. Seattle and Portland both end at the Nisqually Entrance. Yakima gets two rows: the short summer drive to Stevens Canyon on SR 123, dashed because NPS says SR 123 and SR 410 are closed in winter, and a longer drive around the south side of the park on US 12 through Morton to Nisqually. We don't route to Carbon River or Mowich Lake, because there's no public access, or to White River, where Sunrise Road stays closed to vehicles in 2026.

Seattle-Tacoma is the default: 74 miles to Nisqually, and NPS says the road from the entrance to Longmire stays open through winter except in extreme weather. Yakima looks closest, 71 miles to Stevens Canyon, but only while SR 123 is open. Outside that season its drive to Nisqually is 137 miles (3 h 23 min), much longer than from Seattle. Portland is 138 miles, 64 miles and 56 min farther than Seattle-Tacoma. NPS measures from each city to Ashford, so its numbers differ from our airport-to-gate miles.

Match the airport to the season.

Late May to early November: NPS says Ohanapecosh on SR 123 is generally open via Highway 12 from Yakima or Packwood, so Yakima works for the southeast side: 71 miles (1 h 50 min) to Stevens Canyon. Inside the park, Stevens Canyon Road runs 21 miles from Paradise to Ohanapecosh by our routing. NPS says access to other areas from Ohanapecosh may be closed early and late in the season, so check road status before you count on crossing.

November to late May: fly to Seattle-Tacoma or Portland and use the Nisqually Entrance. NPS says SR 123 and SR 410 are closed in winter, and that for winter access to the east side of the park, visitors must use I-90 and US 12. The road from Longmire to Paradise closes nightly from November 1 through winter and reopens in the morning depending on snow removal. From November 1 to May 1, NPS requires every vehicle in the park to carry tire chains, four-wheel drive included.

Sunrise and White River in 2026: the Sunrise area closed on August 13, 2026 for the Grand Park 2 and Wonderland Complex fires. White River Road and its campground reopened September 5, 2026, but Sunrise Road stays closed to vehicles until further notice, open only to walkers and bikes. In a normal year NPS closes the road to Sunrise and White River for winter in mid-October or earlier. Road detail for the whole park is on Mount Rainier road closures.

Winter: fly to Seattle or Portland.

Seattle, Portland, or Yakima?

We don't publish fares. What sets them is how many nonstop routes an airport has, and whether your trip needs a connection. Seattle-Tacoma is the big one: the Port of Seattle says 37 airlines serve 96 nonstop domestic and 36 international destinations, including Canada, Mexico and seasonal routes. It's also the shortest year-round drive, so for most trips it's the first airport to check.

Portland adds 64 miles and 56 min of driving to Nisqually. Its site lists nonstops including British Airways to London Heathrow, so it can work if its flights suit you better. Yakima's departures board listed Alaska Airlines flights to Seattle-Tacoma, so flying there through Seattle only makes sense for an east-side stay in season.

You don't have to fly in and out of the same airport. In season, Seattle in and Yakima out, or the reverse, crosses the park from Nisqually over Paradise and Stevens Canyon Road with no backtracking. Check the one-way rental fee before you decide.

Rental cars, GPS, and getting around.

Plan on a rental car or your own vehicle. NPS's directions page gives driving routes and doesn't describe a bus or train into the park.

Set your GPS carefully. NPS says the park's street address, 55210 238th Avenue East, leads to park headquarters in Ashford, not to the Nisqually Entrance. To reach the entrance, use 39000 State Route 706 E, Ashford, WA 98304. NPS also warns that GPS may send you to the wrong entrance or try the most direct route, which could lead to closed gates, and that rerouting can take hours.

Can I fly into Yakima for Mount Rainier?

In season, yes. Yakima Air Terminal is 71 road miles (1 h 50 min) from the Stevens Canyon Entrance, and NPS says SR 123 there is generally open late May to early November. The rest of the year SR 123 is closed, and the drive around to the Nisqually Entrance is 137 miles (3 h 23 min). For a winter trip, Seattle-Tacoma is closer.

Is Sunrise open in 2026?

Not to cars. The Sunrise area closed on August 13, 2026 for the Grand Park 2 and Wonderland Complex fires.
