Mount Rainier road conditions depend on the entrance and season. Nisqually is the normal winter vehicle approach to Longmire and Paradise, with a nightly gate above Longmire and daily safety decisions. Sunrise, Stevens Canyon and the passes are seasonal. Every vehicle must carry tire chains November 1 to May 1. Check the NPS road report and gate alerts before driving; normal seasons do not establish access today.

Nisqually approaches Longmire and Paradise from the southwest. Stevens Canyon and the passes connect the southeast and northeast in season; White River and Sunrise are separate branches.
The table gives normal seasons, with rough windows kept as words. The combined northwest row distinguishes Mowich Lake Road from the nonmotorized Carbon River Road.

Use Nisqually for winter vehicle access to Longmire and Paradise, and check the gate each day.
In winter, the gate normally opens at 9 am, closes uphill at 4 pm and downhill at 5 pm, conditions permitting. NPS recommends leaving Paradise by 4:30 pm. It can open late, close early or stay closed all day for weather, avalanche or road conditions.
NPS says to check Alerts after 4 pm for the next day's expected status and again after 7 am on the day. Parking pressure can also lead to metering, with one car allowed up for each car that comes down. Wait in the Longmire parking lot, not a traffic lane.
The summer route uses SR 123 and Stevens Canyon Road. In winter use SR 7 at Morton, then SR 706 through Ashford to Nisqually. SR 123 and SR 410 close for winter; I-90 and US 12 are the winter highway routes to the east side.
Mowich Lake normally has a mid-July to mid-October season on a gravel road from SR 165. Carbon River Road became a walking and cycling route after the 2006 flood. Both approaches depend on SR 165 and Fairfax Bridge outside the park; check road notices before planning either one. A normal season does not establish bridge access.

The Sunrise page gives late June or early July to late September or early October. Directions says usually by July 1 through early September, then nightly gates from late September and full winter closure by mid-October or earlier. Check road status rather than treating either window as fixed.
Carry the right traction equipment and choose the correct entrance before leaving home.
Every vehicle must carry chains, including four-wheel and all-wheel drive, regardless of tires or weather. Cable chains count. AutoSocks are allowed for passenger vehicles under 10,000 pounds. Vehicles over 10,000 pounds must carry a second set of chains and chain up when traction tires or chains are required.
Paradise is at 5,400 feet, above many state highway passes. NPS notes that the access roads are narrower and have fewer safety pullouts than state highways. Practice fitting chains before the trip.
Westside Road is an active geohazard zone. When it is open to vehicles, park south of the Dry Creek barricade and avoid lingering in the rockfall zone. Paradise Valley Road is a one-way scenic connection from Paradise to Stevens Canyon Road; check its separate status.
GPS can lead to the wrong entrance or a closed gate, with hours of rerouting. On the busiest summer weekends, Nisqually and White River entrance waits can exceed an hour; NPS suggests before 10 am or after 2:30 pm to reduce delays. Road access does not establish facility services or reservation requirements. Check reservation guidance.
Park-wide recreation visits provide seasonal context, not road traffic or an access guarantee.
