Newfound Gap Road links Gatlinburg and Cherokee. Little River Road leads west toward Townsend, while separate secondary roads reach Kuwohi, Cades Cove and the quieter valleys.

The main roads remain the normal winter routes, with weather and local access rules to check.
Newfound Gap Road links Gatlinburg and Cherokee; Little River Road links Sugarlands and Townsend. Roads are narrow and winding, with blind curves and steep drop-offs. Cell service is extremely limited, so check closures before starting.
Cades Cove Loop Road normally runs sunrise to sunset. NPS's published 2026 vehicle-free Wednesdays ran May 6 through September 30. The campground with a reservation, picnic area, stables and store have separate access; picnic parking is limited, especially in the morning.
A parking tag is required for stops longer than 15 minutes, including Vehicle-Free Days. RVs and trailers need designated spaces, which are few. Upper Tremont, Wear Cove and Cataloochee are also listed as year-round routes, weather permitting. Winter has no seasonal Wednesday vehicle closure.

In the 2021 to 2025 monthly averages, March has 55% of October's recreation visits, April 64% and May 77%. October is the peak. November has 62%, December 47% and January 26%. These park-wide visits do not establish which roads are accessible. See the November guide.

Newfound Gap Road, US 441 between Gatlinburg and Cherokee, is one of the park's primary roads and is open year-round, weather permitting. It has no seasonal closure, but snow, ice, and construction can close it on short notice. The published 2026 seasonal schedule gives TBD for Straight Fork Road following Hurricane Helene impacts, and TBD for Heintooga Round Bottom Road. Those entries do not establish today's status or a future opening date. Check NPS road notices before planning Round Bottom horse camp access. Heintooga Ridge Road has its own separate seasonal window.
