Every Great Smoky Mountains road on one timeline.

The park sorts its roads into two groups. Primary roads, Newfound Gap Road (US 441), Little River Road, and Cades Cove Loop Road, are open year-round, weather permitting. Secondary roads close for part of the year, and the seasonal road schedule gives each one its 2026 season. Kuwohi Road (formerly Clingmans Dome Road) is open April 1 to November 29, 2026. Forge Creek Road has the longest season, March 6 to December 31. The park itself never closes, but NPS says weather and construction may also cause temporary closures.

The roads open all year.

Newfound Gap Road (US 441) crosses the park from Gatlinburg to Cherokee, and it is open year-round, weather permitting. So is Little River Road, between Sugarlands and Townsend. NPS warns that the park's roads are winding and narrow, with heavy traffic, blind curves, and steep drop-offs, and that cell service is extremely limited, so check status before you cross the mountains in bad weather.

Cades Cove Loop Road is open sunrise to sunset every day, with one exception. Every Wednesday from May 6 through September 30, 2026, it is closed to motor vehicles all day, so walkers and cyclists have the cove to themselves. The campground (with a reservation), picnic area, horse stables, and campground store stay open on those days, but picnic area parking is limited, especially in the morning. Three secondary roads are listed as year-round too. Upper Tremont Road can close for snow, ice, or muddy conditions. Wear Cove Road is a narrow two-way road. Cataloochee Road is a two-lane gravel road that can close for snow, ice, and other hazardous weather.

Closed now: Helene damage and repairs.

Two roads in the Balsam Mountain area are closed, with no 2026 dates. A park alert says Straight Fork and the one-way section of Balsam Mountain Road, Heintooga Round Bottom Road, are closed. The seasonal schedule lists Straight Fork Road as TBD due to Hurricane Helene impacts, and Heintooga Round Bottom Road as TBD. Straight Fork Road is the access road to the Round Bottom horse camp. Heintooga Ridge Road, the paved road in from the Blue Ridge Parkway, still has a season: May 15 to October 31, 2026.

Park Headquarters Road is closed for rehabilitation work on the Sugarlands water and wastewater systems. The alert gives no reopening date, and the road is not on the seasonal schedule, so check the alerts if your plans use it.

Kuwohi Road has one more planned closure this year. On the morning of Tuesday, September 15, 2026, it closes to pedestrians, cyclists, and motorists, along with the trail to Kuwohi Observation Tower, for school programs. Per the NPS release, the road and parking lot close at 8 p.m. the night before and reopen by 2 p.m. Newfound Gap Overlook stays open.

Winter: which roads close.

The seasonal roads close in stages. Heintooga Ridge Road closes after October 31, 2026. Rich Mountain and Parson Branch roads close after November 9, and Kuwohi Road, Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail, and Little Greenbrier Road after November 29. School groups can arrange access to Little Greenbrier Road from December 1 to 30 when scheduled in advance. Forge Creek Road stays open through December 31.

That leaves Newfound Gap Road, Little River Road, Cades Cove Loop Road, and the Upper Tremont, Wear Cove, and Cataloochee roads for a winter trip, all weather permitting. Cades Cove Loop Road has no Wednesday closure in winter. Our Great Smoky Mountains in winter page covers the rest.

How crowds follow the seasonal roads.

The Smokies stay busy all year, but the seasonal roads still shape the crowd. March, when Forge Creek Road opens on the 6th, averages 55% of the visits of October, the busiest month. April, with Kuwohi Road open from the 1st, is 64%. May, when Parson Branch and Heintooga Ridge roads open, is 77%.

October, with every seasonal road still open, is the peak. November drops to 62% as Rich Mountain and Parson Branch roads close after the 9th and Kuwohi Road and Roaring Fork after the 29th, and December is 47%. Even January averages 26% of October, so winter here is quieter, not empty. Big rigs: the 25-foot limit.

Motorhomes, buses, and vans longer than 25 feet, and passenger vehicles towing trailers, are not allowed on Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail, Rich Mountain Road, Parson Branch Road, Little Greenbrier Road, Heintooga Ridge Road, Heintooga Round Bottom Road, or Wear Cove Road. Wear Cove Road also has a ten-ton weight limit. Roaring Fork is one-way and very steep, and on Parson Branch Road, a one-way 8-mile road, NPS recommends high-clearance vehicles.

Is Route 441 from Gatlinburg to Cherokee open today?

Newfound Gap Road, US 441 between Gatlinburg and Cherokee, is one of the park's primary roads and is open year-round, weather permitting. It has no seasonal closure, but snow, ice, and construction can close it on short notice.
