Every Glacier road on one timeline.

NPS sets no fixed calendar dates for Glacier's roads. It describes a pattern instead, weather permitting: most roads open by late May, the full Going-to-the-Sun Road in late June or early July, and the roads close in steps from October to November. The hours page carrying that wording was last updated in 2022. In 2026 two construction projects cut the season short on Two Medicine Road and the Inside North Fork Road.

The one road plowed in winter.

In winter, weather closes most Glacier roads. The part of Going-to-the-Sun Road from West Glacier to Lake McDonald Lodge is usually plowed and open all year, weather permitting, so it is the drive to plan a winter visit around. The full Going-to-the-Sun Road over Logan Pass usually opens in late June or early July and stays fully open until the third Monday in October, conditions permitting. Our Going-to-the-Sun Road guide covers that road in detail. In 2026 no vehicle reservations were needed anywhere in the park. From July 1 through September 7, the Logan Pass Shuttle needed a ticket and Logan Pass parking was limited to three hours; both ended with the shuttle season. NPS says Logan Pass parking is now first come, first served with no time limit until the alpine section closes for winter. Our Glacier reservations page has the rest.

2026 construction closures.

Two Medicine Road closes early in 2026. It is closed at the Running Eagle Falls Trailhead from September 8, 2026, for a project replacing the water distribution system in the Two Medicine developed area and campground. In mid- to late September the closure moves out to the Highway 49 intersection for the Two Medicine Road Rehabilitation, which covers the road from MT-49 to the Two Medicine Lake parking lot and is scheduled to finish late 2027, though it may continue into 2028. Two Medicine Campground is closed all of 2026. Boat tours and the campstore ran May 29 to September 7.

In the North Fork, water system work on the Inside North Fork Road is expected to close it to all traffic from the Polebridge Ranger Station toward Logging Creek starting October 4, 2026. Access to Bowman Lake and Kintla Lake is not affected. NPS expects the major work to be done in November 2026, with no heavy construction in winter and any remaining restoration finished by summer 2027. It gives no reopening date. Elsewhere, the NPS project page expects minimal 2026 road construction that affects travel times.

The same page lists three smaller projects. Culvert work is planned on North Lake McDonald Road in fall 2026. From fall 2026 to spring 2027, a water system replacement at St. Mary Campground and around St. Mary Visitor Center is expected to bring partial campground closures. And from late July to early October, work to plug the old Butte Oil Well affects trail and camping access around Kintla Lake, though the Kintla Lake campground stays open.

Spring and fall: the staggered seasons.

Spring opening is a plowing job, and it takes months. The park's hours page gives two figures: two and a half to three months in one place, two to four months in another. By late May most roads are open for vehicles, except Going-to-the-Sun Road over Logan Pass. In early summer, NPS says several roads still have seasonal closures.

Fall closing goes in steps, all weather permitting. Going-to-the-Sun Road usually stays fully open until the third Monday in October. Many Glacier Road closes the third weekend in November. Two Medicine Road normally closes for the season once snow requires it, but in 2026 construction closes it from September 8.

Storms can close roads for a few days at any time. In 2026, heavy rain closed Going-to-the-Sun Road from Avalanche to Jackson Glacier Overlook at 5 p.m. on September 6, and it reopened on September 9 (NPS release). Flooding in late June closed roads and trails too; Going-to-the-Sun Road reopened June 30 and the Many Glacier Valley was expected to reopen July 1 (NPS release).

How crowds follow the plows.

Glacier's crowd follows the plows. April averages 6% of the visits of July, the busiest month. May, as most roads open by late May, is 27%. June is 72%, and July, when Going-to-the-Sun Road is usually open end to end, is the peak.

September holds at 73% of July. October drops to 18% as the full Going-to-the-Sun Road usually closes after the third Monday, and November is 3%. The best time to visit Glacier page weighs the months, and the September guide covers the month when most roads are still open and visits are below August's.

North Fork roads, fuel, and the border.

The North Fork roads are unpaved and rough. Vehicles over 21 feet and trailers are not allowed on any North Fork road, except private horse trailers going to the Bowman horse corral. NPS recommends a four-wheel or all-wheel drive vehicle and the ability to change a tire, because flats are common.

Fill the tank before you come, because there are no fueling stations inside Glacier. If you are driving to or from Canada, the Chief Mountain Border Crossing is open May 15 through September 30, with varying hours, so outside that window plan on another crossing.

Common questions.

Is Glacier worth visiting if Going-to-the-Sun Road is closed?

Yes, if you plan around it. The stretch from West Glacier to Lake McDonald Lodge is usually open all year, and by late May most roads are open for vehicles, except Going-to-the-Sun Road over Logan Pass, which usually opens fully in late June or early July. In winter the unplowed road past Lake McDonald Lodge is a ski and snowshoe route. In 2026, Two Medicine Road is closed from September 8, so check the project page before a fall trip there.

Does a government shutdown close Glacier's roads?

Generally, no. The current National Park Service contingency plan says park roads, lookouts, trails, and open-air memorials will generally remain accessible to visitors during a lapse in appropriations. It also says parks will not provide regular road or trail condition updates, and that an area must be closed if access becomes a safety issue, such as weather or road conditions. The season pattern on this page does not change, but the GNPROADS alerts may not keep up.
