NPS says park fields transform into patches of blooming goldenrod and asters in mid-to-late summer, naming Canadian goldenrod, grass-leaved goldenrod, New England aster and calico aster. The park has also cut back mowing in some areas to build pollinator habitat, so the meadow edges carry more insect life than they used to. It also advises staying on trails rather than walking through unmowed ground, because of ticks. At the marsh, wildlife holds the early-morning and late-evening pattern, and the first southbound shorebirds and songbirds start moving at the end of the month.

August serves late-summer family trips and anyone who likes a meadow. The last ten days are the best part of the month if you can flex, with easier weekday mornings and less humidity.
