Crater Lake National Park in September.

By Nicholas Major · Last updated

Crater Lake National Park in September is a good choice for lake views and a rim-drive outing with fewer visits than July. Headquarters averages a 63°F (17°C) high and 37°F (3°C) low. Pack warm layers and check road access, especially as the month moves into fall.

These normals describe park headquarters, not the lake surface or every rim location. Weather varies with elevation and exposure. Check road and trail conditions separately from these climate averages.

In short

September averages 80,963 recreation visits, 49% of July's peak. NPS includes September among its best bets for warm, dry weather. The monthly count does not show whether Labor Day or any particular weekend will be quiet.

Choose stops along the rim, after checking the route

NPS describes 30 lake-view pullouts along the 33-mile Rim Drive. Choose stops on the sections confirmed open for your visit; you do not need to make a complete circuit essential to the day.

The South and West Entrances on Highway 62 are the normal year-round approaches. Check current park road status and Oregon's Tripcheck before choosing an entrance or onward route. Significant autumn snowfall can close rim roads before their November 1 seasonal closing date.

Keep a warm layer for mornings and evenings

The 37°F (3°C) normal low is a useful packing reminder even when afternoons look mild. NPS notes that from mid-September, warm days can give way to cold nights. Conditions also vary around the rim and with elevation.

Use the local forecast for your actual outing. September's favorable seasonal pattern is not a promise of dry weather on your dates.

Check the services your trip depends on

As fall begins, facilities reduce hours or close. Confirm lodging, meals and any guided activity with the provider before booking the rest of your trip.

Fire season can extend into late September, and smoke can affect air quality. Review NPS fall planning guidance and current conditions before departure, rather than assuming the lake view will be clear.
