Do not treat November 1 as an access guarantee
Significant snowfall can close Rim Drive and the North Entrance before November 1. The South and West Entrances on Highway 62 are the normal year-round approaches. Check the park's official road status for the route you actually need.
NPS also recommends checking Oregon's Tripcheck for roads outside the park. A route through an open entrance does not establish that the full rim circuit is available.
Start with a short walk at Rim Village
The Rim Village promenade is an NPS-recommended fall outing. Use it as a simple option when local access and weather allow, instead of making a longer hike essential to the day.
October can alternate between sunshine, rain and snow. Bring warm layers for the 30°F (-1°C) normal low, and use the forecast to choose your outing. These headquarters averages do not describe every point around the rim.
Confirm meals, lodging and air quality separately
Facilities reduce hours or close as the park prepares for winter. Confirm the services you need directly before setting out; do not assume a summer schedule continues through October.
NPS notes that fire season can extend into October and smoke can affect air quality. Check current conditions near departure rather than assuming either clear air or smoke from the month alone.
Questions about October
Is early October a good time to visit Crater Lake?
It can suit a flexible fall outing. Headquarters averages a 51°F (10°C) high for the month, but rain and snow remain possible. Check the forecast and roads; an early-October date is not a guarantee of a full rim drive.
Can I drive around Crater Lake in late October?
Only if the necessary roads are open. Significant snowfall can close Rim Drive and the North Entrance before the November 1 seasonal closing date. Check official road status shortly before departure.
