Crater Lake National Park in June.

By Nicholas Major · Last updated

Crater Lake National Park in June can suit a lake-view stop, but keep a full rim drive or trail itinerary conditional on snow clearance. Headquarters averages a 57°F (14°C) high and 34°F (1°C) low. Plan around confirmed access, even when the forecast looks warm.

These normals describe park headquarters, not the lake surface or every rim location. Weather varies with elevation and exposure. Check road and trail conditions separately from these climate averages.

In short

June averages 72,067 recreation visits, 44% of July's peak. July is warmer, with a 69°F (21°C) normal high, but brings the highest average visit count. Use that tradeoff when deciding whether to move your trip later.

Check the entrance before adding a detour

The North Entrance and the road around the lake may remain closed due to snow. The South and West Entrances on Highway 62 are the normal year-round approaches. Confirm your intended entrance and onward roads with official road status before fixing a driving route.

There is no fixed reopening date. A June date by itself does not establish that you can drive the full circuit.

Start with the lake view, then choose a walk

Weather permitting, Rim Village gives a view across the entire lake. Rain and snow can hide it behind clouds, so check the webcam and forecast if this is the main reason for your detour.

For a longer outing, ask which plowed Rim Drive sections permit walking. NPS identifies these as a June option before they open to cars. Ordinary trails can still be buried in deep snow and difficult to follow or dangerous; an open road does not establish a suitable hiking route.

Bring layers even for a sunny forecast

June's 34°F (1°C) normal low is much cooler than its afternoon high. NPS describes sunny days alternating with rain and snow during this transition month. Pack for changing conditions and check the local weather guidance.

If warmer, drier weather is your priority, NPS identifies July through September as the best bets. Compare their weather and visits in the best-time guide.

Questions about June

Is early June too early for Crater Lake?

A flexible lake-view visit can work, but snow may limit roads and trails. Check your entrance, the route to Rim Village and current walking permissions. Do not assume a full rim circuit or summer hiking itinerary is available.

Is late June guaranteed to have open roads?

No. NPS sets no fixed date for reopening seasonal roads; snow and other conditions determine access. Check the actual roads you need near departure, rather than relying on an early-versus-late June rule.
