Choose between the paved loop and gravel rim road
Badlands Loop Road, Highway 240, is a paved route through the North Unit. Use it as the starting point for a driving plan, then check the roads and stops you want to include.
Sage Creek Rim Road, Highway 590, follows the north rim of the Badlands Wilderness Area on gravel. NPS says it may close after heavy rain or snow. Check road conditions before adding it; October's average temperatures do not establish whether that route is suitable.
Choose October for cooler days, September for more warmth
September's normal high is 82°F (28°C); October's is 65°F (19°C). October also has fewer average visits, making it the cooler, lower-count choice. September may suit you better if you prefer warmer outdoor stops.
NPS warns that weather can change suddenly. Check the forecast, carry layers and confirm facility hours for your dates. If rain changes your walking plans, remember that wet clay formations are very slippery. Pick routes from actual conditions rather than the autumn label.
