Badlands National Park crowds by month.

By Nicholas Major · Last updated

Badlands National Park crowds peak in July, averaging 245,621 recreation visits. December has the fewest at 10,544, 4% of the peak. Low winter counts come with possible weather-related road closures; they do not guarantee an easy sightseeing trip.

Reading the shape of the year.

Summer is the high-count season. June averages 90% of the July peak and August 85%. A different summer month still falls close to the busiest part of the year.

Compare May, September and October separately. May averages 44% of the peak, September 56%, and October 27%. The word shoulder season hides meaningful differences in visit counts. The best-time guide explains their weather and walking tradeoffs.

Winter's low counts need an access check. January averages 5% of the peak and February 5%. NPS warns that winter or extreme weather can close roads. Check the route before choosing a low-count month for a drive.

Months with intermediate visit counts

May and September average 30% to under 60% of the peak. October falls below that group at 27%. These are count bands, not recommended travel dates. For the full "so when should I actually go?" verdict, which weighs crowds against weather and road access, see the Badlands best-time-to-visit page.

What these numbers measure

Each figure is the mean recreation visits for that calendar month across 2021–2025, from the NPS Visitor Use Statistics Data Package, 2025. Each percentage divides that mean by this park's highest monthly mean. Visits are not unique people.

The data does not separate North and South Unit crowds, holidays, rally dates or particular trails. It describes historical monthly counts, not current crowd levels. We are independent of the National Park Service.

Common questions.

When is Badlands National Park least crowded?

December has the fewest average recreation visits, 10,544, or 4% of the July peak. Check official road conditions before choosing a winter visit. Low counts do not guarantee access or an empty overlook.

Is September quieter than October at Badlands?

No. September averages 137,202 visits, versus October's 65,693. That compares whole months; it cannot predict the crowd on a particular date.

Can these counts show Sturgis rally crowds or a quiet arrival time?

No. Monthly park totals do not isolate the rally's dates or measure hourly entrance queues. Use official park information and separate event planning for your travel dates; do not read an event-day forecast from this calendar.
