Choose an overlook before committing to a longer drive
Big Badlands Overlook looks across the eastern portion of the Badlands wall. Consider it for a brief view if the approach and walking surfaces are suitable.
The Badlands Loop Road is a paved North Unit route. Check road conditions before deciding how much of it to drive. NPS warns that winter roads can be slick and icy; pavement does not establish a safe route after a storm.
Use the forecast to decide whether to go
The station's December snowfall normal is 7.7 inches of monthly accumulation. It does not tell you how much snow lies on the ground during your visit. NPS describes sudden weather changes as common, so check the forecast before leaving and keep another plan available.
Confirm visitor-center and facility hours for your dates, especially around Christmas. Take the layers you need for stops outside the car and shorten or postpone the outing if conditions make the route unsuitable.
Questions about December
Is December a good time to visit Badlands National Park?
December can suit a short winter sightseeing stop if you can adapt to road conditions and cold. It has the lowest average visit count, but that is not a road-access forecast. Choose the route after checking weather and park conditions.
Can you drive through Badlands in December?
Check road conditions before planning a through-drive. Badlands Loop Road is paved, but winter weather can make roads slick or icy and can cause closures. Keep your route flexible rather than relying on a complete loop.
