Inside or outside the park?
Inside-park lodging removes a repeated entrance drive and puts you next to one trip region. It also has limited inventory and seasonal dates. The official Yellowstone lodging page lists nine lodging options run by the authorized concessioner and shows typical seasons. Outside the park, NPS lists Gardiner, West Yellowstone, East Yellowstone, and Silver Gate or Cooke City within five miles of an entrance. Outside lodging does not erase the drive beyond the gate.

A geyser-heavy two-day trip fits Old Faithful or West Yellowstone. A three-day first trip is easier from Canyon or with a split stay between the west side and the north. A wildlife-first trip fits Mammoth, Gardiner, or the northeast gateway. A Yellowstone and Grand Teton combination fits Grant Village or a split stay. Is it better to stay inside or outside Yellowstone?
Stay inside when cutting daily drive time matters most and your dates match the lodging season. Stay outside for more inventory or a specific entrance. Neither is best for every itinerary.
What is the nicest place to stay in Yellowstone?
That is a hotel preference, not a route question. For trip efficiency, Canyon is the most balanced base, Old Faithful is strongest for geysers, and Mammoth is strongest for the northern range.
Is West Yellowstone a good base?
Yes, especially for Old Faithful and the western thermal areas. NPS lists West Yellowstone within five miles of the park, but Madison Junction is still an average 30-minute drive beyond West Entrance.
Should I split my Yellowstone stay?
A split stay helps on trips of three nights or more when both the northern range and lower loop matter. It trades one hotel move for less repeated driving.
Which Yellowstone base is best for Grand Teton too?

Methodology
Base seasons and nearby-area descriptions come from official NPS lodging and gateway-community pages. The time matrix runs a shortest-path calculation over the NPS road-segment table. It uses 40 minutes for the official 35 to 45 minute Madison to Old Faithful range and 55 minutes for the 50 to 60 minute Canyon to Tower range. It does not include hotel access roads, entrance queues, traffic, stops, or closed roads.
