Buying and using the pass.

Bring a card. Since July 1, 2025, Shenandoah has taken only card or mobile payments for entrance and campground fees. If cash is all you have, the NPS fees page lists third-party vendors in nearby towns that sell park passes. Park bookstores, gift shops, lodging, waysides, and restaurants still take cash.

Or buy ahead. Entrance passes are sold online up to a year in advance. A digital America the Beautiful pass from Recreation.gov saves to your phone and works right away. A physical pass ordered online from the USGS store can take up to three weeks to arrive, and the order receipt doesn't count as a pass.

Nobody at the gate. You still owe the fee. NPS says you have to pay to enter the park, whether you drive Skyline Drive or hike in from the boundary. In fall 2026 the park begins installing automated entry stations at all four entrances, meant for after hours when staff aren't there. They sell 7-day vehicle, motorcycle, bicycle, and pedestrian passes by credit or debit card, and they scan the barcode on a pass you already have.

Bring photo ID with an America the Beautiful pass. NPS says passholders must show valid photo ID with each pass. Those passes are non-refundable and non-transferable, and they can't be replaced if lost or stolen.

Groups, tours, and schools. A non-commercial group of 16 or more pays $15 for each person 16 or older, and never more than the matching commercial fee. Commercial tours pay by seating capacity, full or not: $75 for a van seating 7 to 15, $100 for a mini-bus seating 16 to 25, and $200 for a motor coach seating 26 or more. A commercial sedan seating 1 to 6 pays $25 plus $10 a passenger. Schools and academic institutions visiting for educational or scientific purposes can request a fee waiver at least two weeks ahead. Recreational hiking or camping trips that aren't part of a course don't qualify. The form is on the NPS academic fee waiver page.

Visiting from outside the U.S.? Shenandoah isn't one of the eleven parks on the NPS entrance fee prices page that charge a $100 nonresident fee, so a car pays the same $30. The $80 America the Beautiful pass is for U.S. citizens and residents. The non-resident version is $250.

Where the money goes. NPS says 80 percent of entrance fee money goes to projects that directly benefit visitors, and the other 20 percent helps parks that don't charge fees. Shenandoah has spent fees on restoring historic buildings, forest health, and seasonal staff who work on trails and lead ranger programs.

Free entrance days in 2026.

NPS lists eight fee-free dates for 2026, ten days in all: February 16, May 25, June 14, July 3 to 5, August 25, September 17, October 27, and November 11. Starting in 2026, free entrance on those days is for U.S. citizens and residents only. Other fees can still apply, and the Old Rag ticket has no fee waivers of any kind.

Three of those dates are still ahead: September 17, October 27, and November 11. October 27 is the one to think twice about. October is Shenandoah's busiest month, averaging about 10,300 recreation visits a day over the past five years. September and November each average about 5,100 a day, so saving $30 on September 17 or November 11 is a fair trade.

Old Rag, backcountry, and other fees.

Old Rag day-use ticket. From March 1 to November 30, the Saddle, Ridge, and Ridge Access trails need a $2 day-use ticket bought in advance, and it's a separate purchase from your entrance pass. How tickets are released is on our Shenandoah Old Rag ticket page.

Backcountry camping. Among the ten parks with the most backcountry nights a year, Shenandoah was the only one that didn't charge a backcountry fee. Now a permit costs $9 per person plus a $6 reservation fee, and the price doesn't change with the number of nights, up to 14. Two campers pay $24 in all. The $6 is non-refundable, and the $9 per person comes back if you cancel more than three days before the start date. A Senior or Access pass doesn't discount it. Campgrounds. Camping fees are separate from the entrance pass. Senior and Access pass holders get 50% off the camping fee. Enter the pass details when you reserve on Recreation.gov, and bring the pass and photo ID. See Shenandoah camping.

Fishing. Anglers 16 and older need a valid Virginia fishing license. You don't need a state trout license or a separate park permit, per the NPS fishing page.

Is the annual pass worth it?

Two seven-day vehicle passes cost $60, so the $55 Shenandoah Annual Pass pays for itself on a second trip within the year. Watch the passenger limit: the annual pass covers the holder and passengers up to four adults in all, while the $30 vehicle pass covers everyone in the car. The $80 America the Beautiful pass costs $25 more and also covers other national parks and federal recreation lands, so it wins once the rest of your year's entrance fees top $25. If you're 62 or older, the $20 Senior Annual Pass costs less than one visit and halves your campsite fees. Shenandoah's fees don't change by season, so pick your dates on the best time to visit Shenandoah page and budget the pass separately.

For visitors from outside the U.S., the $250 non-resident pass doesn't pay off here alone, since a car pays $30 at Shenandoah. It only makes sense on a longer trip through parks that charge more. The calculator above runs your own numbers.

How can you get into Skyline Drive for free?

U.S. citizens and residents get in free on the 2026 fee-free days listed above; September 17, October 27, and November 11 are still ahead. Kids under 16 are always free. Some passes cost nothing: the military pass for current military and dependents, the lifetime military pass for veterans and Gold Star Family members, the Access pass, the 4th grade pass, and the Volunteer pass. Schools on an educational visit can request a fee waiver at least two weeks ahead.

Do I still have to pay if the Shenandoah entrance station is unstaffed?
