Check the west-side dirt loop before driving it
The Bajada Loop Drive is a 6-mile (9.7 km) unpaved, graded dirt loop in Saguaro West. It has scenic pullouts, picnic areas and hiking trailheads. Choose it with its road surface in mind, rather than assuming it is the paved east-side loop.
Check road conditions and vehicle restrictions before departure. Plan any walks from the day's forecast and your heat tolerance, with shorter stops if a longer walk does not fit. Confirm the west-district destination; Tucson separates the two districts.
Separate cactus-flower season from saguaro peak bloom
NPS places cactus-flower season in April and May, but says the saguaro cactus itself often reaches peak bloom toward the end of May. An April visit is not a promise of the park's namesake cactus at its flowering peak.
Bloom timing and extent depend on conditions, so keep flowers as a possibility rather than the only purpose of the trip. Tucson Airport averages 0.24 inches of April precipitation; that monthly normal cannot predict the flowers you will see.
Questions about April
Is April a good time to visit Saguaro National Park?
April can suit desert sightseeing, with fewer average visits than March, but afternoons are warmer. Check the forecast and your route, and avoid relying on a guaranteed bloom.
Will saguaro cacti be at peak bloom in April?
Not necessarily. NPS describes April–May as cactus-flower season but says saguaro peak bloom is often toward the end of May. Timing and extent vary with conditions.
