North Cascades's crowd calendar, month by month.
Each bar is a calendar month's average recreation visits over the last five years (2021-2025), shown as a share of North Cascades's own busiest month. The full numbers are in the table below, and available month guides are linked.

Reading the shape of the year.
August has fewer national-park visits than July. August averages 84% of the July peak. September averages 69%. These differences cannot tell you whether a particular viewpoint or trailhead will be quiet.
June and October have much lower counts. June averages 26% of the peak and October 19%. Use the best-time guide to weigh their different seasonal limitations before choosing one.
Winter numbers are especially small. December's mean is 13 recreation visits. NPS describes normal winter access limitations. A low count does not establish an available route or an empty highway stop.
Months with intermediate visit counts
No month averages 30% to under 60% of the peak. June is below that band and September is above it; the calendar does not force a shoulder-season label onto either month. For the full "so when should I actually go?" verdict, which weighs crowds against weather and road access, see the North Cascades best-time-to-visit page.
What these numbers measure
Each figure averages recreation visits for that calendar month across 2021–2025, from the NPS Visitor Use Statistics Data Package, 2025. Each percentage divides that mean by the highest monthly mean. The reporting unit is North Cascades National Park, code NOCA. Ross Lake and Lake Chelan national recreation areas have separate reporting units.
These are visits, not unique people. They do not represent all travel through the wider park complex, Highway 20 traffic, Diablo Lake parking, hourly congestion or weekday differences. Common questions.
When is North Cascades National Park least crowded?
December has the fewest average national-park recreation visits at 13. Normal winter access limitations still apply. The count does not establish easy hiking, open routes or quiet Highway 20 stops.
Is August or September less crowded in North Cascades?
September averages 6,671 national-park visits, compared with August's 8,037. These counts exclude Ross Lake and Lake Chelan recreation areas and cannot forecast a particular trailhead's crowding.
Why can Diablo Lake feel busy when North Cascades counts are low?
The figures here cover the national park reporting unit, not the separate recreation areas or all highway traffic through the complex. They cannot measure Diablo Lake parking pressure. A small national-park total is not evidence that roadside stops will be empty.
Can this calendar identify the quietest weekday or arrival time?
No. Monthly totals cannot separate weekdays, weekends, holidays or hours. They also cannot predict parking availability. Check official information for the specific destination you plan to visit.
