Choose the approach before committing to a crossing
NPS describes Highway 20 reopening in late April or early May as the usual pattern. It is not a booked opening date. Check official road information before making a west-to-east drive essential to your itinerary.
Road reopening also does not establish hiking access. NPS says higher roads and trails can remain cold and snow-covered into early July. Check the individual trail and prepare for spring snow hazards; Newhalem's lowland temperatures cannot answer that question.
Consider Ladder Creek Falls if the approach and path allow
Ladder Creek Falls lies behind Gorge Powerhouse in Upper Newhalem. Its loop leads through gardens to the falls and includes steep steps with handrails. Choose it only if those steps and the day's conditions fit your abilities.
Newhalem averages 4.65 inches of April precipitation. Bring rain protection and check the forecast before a walk. Visitor services are limited in spring, so confirm facility hours and bring your own supplies rather than depending on a seasonal stop.
Questions about April
Can I drive through North Cascades National Park in April?
Do not assume the Highway 20 crossing will be available. NPS describes late April or early May as the usual reopening period, with dates varying by conditions. Check official road information before committing to a route across the mountains.
Does Highway 20 reopening mean hiking trails are clear?
No. NPS says higher roads and trails can remain cold and snow-covered into early July. A road opening is not a trail report. Check the route you intend to walk and choose a different outing if its conditions do not fit your preparation.
