Which airport for Indiana Dunes?

NPS names four airports near the park: Gary/Chicago International, South Bend International, and Chicago's Midway and O'Hare. Only three belong in a flight search. Gary/Chicago International's own site describes it as serving general aviation, corporate, commercial and cargo users, and it names no passenger airline, so we leave it out. You reach Indiana Dunes on interstates and U.S. and state highways, and most of its sites are off U.S. Highway 12. We route the two Chicago airports to the west end, at the Paul H. Douglas Center, and South Bend to the east end, at Mount Baldy.

Every airport-to-entrance drive.

Every airport drive we route, each to the end of the park nearer that airport. You reach the park on interstates and state highways rather than a park road, so none of these drives has a seasonal closure. The Indiana Dunes Visitor Center sits between the two ends.

Midway is the shortest drive, 35 miles and 1 h. South Bend is a little farther at 41 miles, but about the same time, 1 h 2 min. O'Hare is the longest, 55 miles and 1 h 43 min with no traffic. One catch at South Bend: it runs on Eastern Time, an hour later than Chicago, while every other South Shore Line station uses Central time, per the airport. Keep that in mind when you read a train schedule.

Match the airport to your end of the park.

West end (Paul H. Douglas Center, West Beach, Miller Woods): Midway, 35 miles, or O'Hare, 55. Gary Public Transportation Corporation's Bus Route 13 passes right in front of the Douglas Center and close to the West Beach entrance.

East end (Mount Baldy): South Bend, 41 miles.

The middle (Indiana Dunes Visitor Center, Dunewood Campground): we don't route an airport here. By train, the visitor center is 1.33 miles south of Dune Park Station on the Dunes Kankakee Trail, and Dunewood Campground is a half-mile walk from Beverly Shores Station.

Chicago or South Bend?

We don't publish fares. What sets them is how many routes an airport has, and whether you need a connection. South Bend lists 16 nonstop destinations on five airlines: Allegiant, American, Breeze, Delta and United. United flies daily nonstop to Chicago O'Hare and Washington Dulles. American flies to Dallas/Fort Worth and Charlotte, and its Chicago O'Hare link is a motorcoach, not a flight.

NPS names both Chicago airports too, but we couldn't get their airline lists from the city's airport site, so check them there. If South Bend has a nonstop from your city, it pairs well with the train. If it doesn't, compare Midway and O'Hare.

Why not Gary? Gary/Chicago International is on the NPS list, and the South Shore Line even has a station called Gary/Chicago Airport. But the airport's own site describes it as serving general aviation, corporate, commercial and cargo users and names no passenger airline, so there's nothing to book.

Rental cars, the train, and buses.

South Bend lists Alamo, Avis, Budget, Enterprise and National, all with desks in the west end of the terminal. NPS also mentions several small taxi companies in the towns around the park.

No car? South Bend's airport has its own South Shore Line station. The line, run by NICTD, connects the airport with cities across northwest Indiana and ends in downtown Chicago. You can buy tickets by credit card at the east end of the terminal, online, or with cash from the conductor. NPS says the train stops at four stations in the park, Dune Park, Beverly Shores, Ogden Dunes and Miller, each within two miles of park sites. The airport says schedules change, and we don't carry them or the fares, so check the South Shore Line before you go.

From Dune Park Station, the Indiana Dunes Visitor Center is 1.33 miles south and the Indiana Dunes State Park entrance 1 mile north, both on the Dunes Kankakee Trail. From Beverly Shores Station, Lake View Beach is a mile north on Broadway Avenue. From Miller Station, the Paul H. Douglas Center is 2 miles north on Lake Street.

Can you fly into Gary/Chicago International Airport for Indiana Dunes?

Not on a passenger airline. From South Bend, yes. The airport has its own South Shore Line station, and NPS says the train stops at four stations in the park, including Dune Park and Beverly Shores. Check the South Shore Line for the current schedule and remember South Bend is on Eastern Time.
