Choose your summer month

Choose your month around the outings and conditions that matter most.

June

Dry heat below the rim

Use short rim outings and avoid hiking during the hottest hours. Inner-canyon conditions differ sharply from the rim.

501,319 average visits in June

July

Monsoon planning matters

Summer thunderstorms bring lightning and flash-flood risk. Keep exposed viewpoints and trail plans forecast-dependent.

531,134 average visits in July

August

Heat and storms continue

An early start does not remove heat risk. Check the storm forecast before choosing the day’s outdoor stops.

477,093 average visits in August

Getting around in summer

Use the season’s access and safety decisions to choose your outing.

Avoid hiking from 10 am to 4 pm

NPS warns against hiking in the day’s heat. A rim temperature chart must not be used as an inner-canyon forecast.

Leave exposed viewpoints in storms

July and August bring summer thunderstorms. Choose shelter and change the outing when lightning threatens.

Things to do in summer

Choose a shorter viewpoint or a longer outing for the actual conditions.

Short Rim Trail walks

Use a short section and shuttle return. Carry water; the Rim Trail west of Bright Angel Lodge has no water along it.

Hermit Road overlooks

Use the Red Route shuttle during the normal March–November private-vehicle restriction. Confirm the actual timetable for your visit.

Canyon hikes need their own plan

Do not add a river-and-back day hike to a sightseeing list. Read the NPS hiking guidance before any descent.

Where to stay in summer

Choose a South Rim room base; verify current operation before committing.

  • Grand Canyon Village

South Rim lodges normally operate year-round and can book far ahead. Confirm the individual property and approach.

  • Tusayan

Gateway rooms south of the village offer another base. Check transport separately rather than assume every shuttle route operates year-round.

Camping Use the park’s campground calendars and booking guidance. Lodging and road seasons do not establish campsite availability.
