Grand Canyon road conditions depend on the rim. South Rim roads normally have no closing season, but snow and ice can interrupt travel. Hermit Road normally allows private cars in December, January and February, with shuttle access March through November. North Rim roads close to all vehicles December 1 to May 14. South Entrance Road and Desert View Drive serve the South Rim, with Hermit Road west of the village. Highway 67 reaches the separate North Rim; Tuweep has remote dirt-road approaches.
These are recurring access rules, not current status. The North Rim winter closure does not promise full visitor services on every date outside it.

Plan around the normal winter road network, then confirm your route with NPS.
The South Rim is normally open year-round. Roads are generally drivable outside bad weather, but snow can close them while crews clear them. NPS uses rock cinders for traction rather than salt. Tire chains are generally not required, but any vehicle may use them. Check NPS winter driving guidance.
North Rim roads close to all vehicles, including snowmobiles, from December 1 through May 14, with no visitor services. Read North Rim directions and North Rim status for the season outside that closure. Road access, trail access and services are separate checks.
NPS gives about four and a half hours each way between the rims. Jacob Lake has the nearest outside lodging, food and fuel, 45 miles north of the North Rim, with more options in Fredonia and Kanab. Confirm North Rim services before relying on water, food, fuel or a stay in the park.
The 2025 Dragon Bravo Fire severely damaged Grand Canyon Lodge. NPS carried out emergency stabilization and selective demolition that fall. Check North Rim status for access and service planning.

During thunderstorms or other bad weather, shuttle service can be suspended. Buses with space may pick people up wherever safe along the road.
The North Rim Entrance is 30 miles south of Jacob Lake, with another 14 miles to the rim.
Narrow roads and blind corners impose a separate length limit.
Plan a remote high-clearance drive with no services.
A permit does not make a rough road passable.
Get an advance day permit or backcountry permit before leaving. Permits are not sold at Tuweep; backcountry permits must be obtained online at least five days ahead. The day-use gate runs sunrise to 30 minutes after sunset, and you must arrive at least an hour before sunset. Read the NPS Tuweep rules.
The three main routes leave AZ 389 between Fredonia and St. George. Sunshine is 61 miles from its AZ 389 turnoff. Main St is 90 miles from St. George and impassable in winter snow or mud. Clayhole is 56 miles from Colorado City and impassable when wet. Vehicles have been stuck for days.
Winter road conditions can change quickly on either approach.
NPS recommends emergency supplies including a shovel, scraper, flashlight, food, water, blankets, medications and booster cables. Check the park road report and Arizona 511. The comparison uses five-year monthly means of park recreation visits from 2021 to 2025. It is a planning comparison, not a road-status measure.

The September 2025 NPS contingency plan says park roads generally remain accessible during a lapse in appropriations. Safety issues, including weather or road conditions, can require closures. The plan also says regular road and trail condition updates will not be provided. Seasonal access rules still apply; check official park and state travel notices before leaving.
