Grand Canyon road conditions by rim.

Every Grand Canyon road on one timeline.

Grand Canyon has two road systems, one on each rim, and they run on different calendars. The South Rim roads have no closing season. Hermit Road follows the shuttle, and the North Rim follows the snow, both on dates the park publishes every year. The North Rim bars run to the December 1 closure, but NPS says the North Rim season usually ends October 15, and in 2025 winter weather forced an early closure. Tuweep has no bar dates and no line on the map: its dirt roads have no season, only weather.

South Rim roads, open all year.

The South Rim is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. South Entrance Road runs from the South Entrance to Grand Canyon Village, and Desert View Drive (SR 64) runs 23 miles from the village to Desert View and the East Entrance. NPS says Desert View Drive is usually open to all vehicles all year, unless snow and ice close it for a while. Because the South Rim is the easier rim to reach, NPS warns day visitors to expect traffic congestion and parking problems, especially during spring break and summer.

Hermit Road (West Rim Drive) runs from Grand Canyon Village to Hermits Rest. From March 1 through November 30 it is closed to private vehicles, and the way in is the free Hermit Road (Red) Route shuttle or a commercial motorcoach tour. In summer thunderstorms and other bad weather the shuttle is suspended, and buses with room stop anywhere safe along the road to pick people up. In December, January, and February you can drive it yourself, unless snow closes it, in a vehicle under 22 feet total length.

The North Rim in 2026.

The North Rim opened for the 2026 season on May 15, 2026, and it is a different trip this year. After the 2025 Dragon Bravo Fire, Grand Canyon Lodge is gone, and there is no overnight lodging on the North Rim in 2026. NPS says the season focuses mainly on day use and limited backcountry access, and there is no potable water, so bring water and food. The scenic roads to Cape Royal and Point Imperial are open. The North Rim Campground, run by Aramark this season, is open June 1 to October 15, 2026, the general store is open May 15 to October 15 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and the gas station is pay at the pump, 24 hours. The nearest lodging outside the park is at Jacob Lake, 45 miles north of the North Rim, with more in Fredonia and Kanab.

The North Kaibab Trail and Phantom Ranch have been closed since August 29, 2026, after flash flooding in Bright Angel Canyon, and NPS gives no reopening estimate. That is a trail closure, not a road closure, but if a canyon hike is your reason to drive to the North Rim, check the North Rim status page first. Winter: one rim open, one closed.

In winter only the South Rim is open. North Rim roads are closed to all vehicles, including snowmobiles, from December 1 to May 14, and no visitor services are available. On the South Rim, NPS says roads are drivable except in bad weather. The road crew uses rock cinders for tire traction instead of salt, and tire chains are generally not required, though any vehicle may use them. Hermit Road opens to private vehicles on December 1, unless snow closes it.

How crowds follow the seasons.

The park counts visits for the whole park, not by rim, and NPS says 90% of travelers visit the South Rim. The Hermit Road car window lines up with the quietest months. December averages 56% of the visits of July, the busiest month, January 32%, and February 34%. March, when the shuttle takes Hermit Road back on March 1, jumps to 67%.

The North Rim opens May 15, when park-wide visits are already at 95% of July. October, the last month of the North Rim season, is still at 83%, and November drops to 62%. Vehicle length, clearance, and Tuweep.

Length is the limit that catches people here. Hermit Road is open only to vehicles under 22 feet total length, even in its December to February car window. On the North Rim, RVs over 22 feet and vehicle-trailer combinations over 22 feet total are not allowed on Cape Royal Road and the scenic drive, because the roads are narrow and windy with blind corners. Parking at the North Kaibab Trailhead is also limited to vehicles under 22 feet. Our Grand Canyon camping page covers campground RV limits.

Tuweep is its own trip. You need an advance day permit or backcountry permit, bought before you go, because neither is sold on site, and backcountry permits must be obtained online at least 5 days ahead. The three main routes leave AZ 389 between Fredonia, Arizona, and St. George, Utah, and NPS says to allow 3 or more hours one way on dirt roads that call for a high-clearance vehicle. The Main St Route from St. George, 90 miles, is impassable in winter snow and mud, and the Clayhole Route from Colorado City, 56 miles, is impassable when wet. Common questions.

Why is Arizona 67 closed?

Usually because of winter. Highway 67 is the road to the North Rim, and NPS closes North Rim roads to all vehicles, snowmobiles included, from December 1 to May 14. In 2025 the Dragon Bravo Fire also closed the North Rim, and winter weather ended that season early. For 2026 the North Rim opened May 15. Does a government shutdown close Grand Canyon?

Generally, no. The current National Park Service contingency plan says park roads, lookouts, trails, and open-air memorials will generally remain accessible to visitors during a lapse in appropriations. It also says parks will not provide regular road or trail condition updates, and that an area must be closed if access becomes a safety issue, such as weather or road conditions. The seasonal dates on this page do not change, but the Roads Line and the park's X updates may not keep up.
