Tennessee shares Great Smoky Mountains National Park with North Carolina — the most-visited National Park in the country every year by a wide margin. Other notable Tennessee NPS units include Big South Fork National River & Recreation Area, Obed Wild & Scenic River, Andrew Johnson National Historic Site, Chickamauga & Chattanooga National Military Park (TN/GA), Fort Donelson, and Stones River. Knoxville (TYS) is the closest major airport to Great Smoky; Nashville (BNA) is the next nearest. Great Smoky's busiest months are July and October (peak summer plus peak fall foliage). The park is free to enter at the gates, though a parking-tag fee was introduced in 2023 — check the official NPS fees page for current rules. Spring wildflower season runs late March through April; fall foliage peaks mid-October at elevation, late October at lower elevations.

Methodology

Unit list and per-unit visit counts come from the official NPS Visitor Use Statistics Data Package, 2025. The "5-year average visits" column is the mean of 2021-2025 Recreation Visits. Multi-state NPS units (Yellowstone, Death Valley, Great Smoky Mountains and others) are listed under every state they touch; the per-unit visit count is the unit's total, not a per-state share.
