National Parks in Mississippi.

Mississippi's NPS network at a glance — units, designations, visit totals, and what shapes the visiting season.

By Nicholas Major · Last updated

Mississippi has more than five NPS units, anchored by Vicksburg National Military Park, the Natchez Trace Parkway (444 miles, shared with Alabama and Tennessee), and Gulf Islands National Seashore (shared with Florida). Other units include Brices Cross Roads National Battlefield Site, Tupelo National Battlefield, Medgar and Myrlie Evers Home National Monument, and Natchez National Historical Park. Jackson (JAN) is the main anchor airport; Memphis (MEM, Tennessee) reaches the northern parkway end; Gulfport (GPT) anchors the state's Gulf Islands unit. The parkway is open year-round but seasonal hours apply at headquarters and visitor centers. Mississippi's NPS network is heavily Civil War, parkway-driving, and Gulf Coast — winter and spring are the most comfortable visiting windows; summer Gulf humidity and tropical-storm risk are significant.

Methodology

Unit list and per-unit visit counts come from the official NPS Visitor Use Statistics Data Package, 2025. The "5-year average visits" column is the mean of 2021-2025 Recreation Visits. Multi-state NPS units (Yellowstone, Death Valley, Great Smoky Mountains and others) are listed under every state they touch; the per-unit visit count is the unit's total, not a per-state share.
