Hawaii has Haleakalā National Park (Maui) and Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park (the Big Island) as its two flagship NPS units, plus Kalaupapa National Historical Park (Molokaʻi), Pearl Harbor National Memorial, Puʻuhonua o Hōnaunau, Kaloko-Honokōhau, and Puʻukoholā Heiau. The state's major airports are Honolulu (HNL), Kahului (OGG) for Maui, and Kona/Hilo (KOA/ITO) for the Big Island. Hawaiʻi Volcanoes is the country's most actively erupting National Park; eruption status and air-quality conditions vary and can close roads or trails on short notice — check the NPS park status page before planning a visit. Haleakalā's sunrise summit visit requires a timed-entry reservation in season — check the official NPS Haleakalā page for the current reservation window. Both National Parks operate year-round; visiting weather is most reliable May through October. Inter-island travel between Maui and the Big Island for visitors hitting both Haleakalā and Hawaiʻi Volcanoes is a 45-minute flight; there is no scheduled passenger ferry service between the major islands.

Methodology

Unit list and per-unit visit counts come from the official NPS Visitor Use Statistics Data Package, 2025. The "5-year average visits" column is the mean of 2021-2025 Recreation Visits. Multi-state NPS units (Yellowstone, Death Valley, Great Smoky Mountains and others) are listed under every state they touch; the per-unit visit count is the unit's total, not a per-state share.
