These two charts use the same crowd-calendar method shown on National Sites Guide's Yosemite page: take the five-year monthly average of NPS Recreation Visits, then show each month in calendar order so readers can see the lightest and busiest windows at a glance. At Carlsbad Caverns, January and February are the lightest months, while July is the busiest. At White Sands, February and January are the lightest months, while March is the standout peak.
Low-crowd months at New Mexico's two national parks
Five-year monthly averages cover 2021-2025. Each percentage compares the park's quietest month with that same park's busiest month; it is not a cross-park crowd index.
| Park | Least-busy month | Busiest month | Quietest vs peak | 5-year avg annual visits | 2025 visits |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Carlsbad Caverns NPNM - National Park | January (19,549 avg monthly visits) | July (51,173) | 38% | 401,110 | 410,778 |
| White Sands NPNM - National Park | February (41,885 avg monthly visits) | March (99,222) | 42% | 715,734 | 659,742 |

How this was computed
Source dataset. National Park Service Visitor Use Statistics Data Package, 2025. The monthly statistic used here is Total Recreation Visits (TRV), available through the NPS Visitor Use Statistics portal and the 2025 Data.gov package.
Window. Each bar is the arithmetic mean of that calendar month's recreation visits from 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024, and 2025. The five-year window reduces the effect of one unusual closure, storm, or holiday year.
Reading the chart. Bars are actual monthly visit counts, not a national crowd score. The blue bars mark the two lowest months for that park; the rust bar marks that same park's busiest month.
Important limitation. Recreation visits count visits, not unique people. Counting methodology is set by NPS and can vary by unit. These charts are best used for within-park month-to-month timing, not for saying one park is inherently more crowded than another.
What this finding does, and doesn’t, tell us
For Carlsbad Caverns, the cleanest low-crowd answer is winter: January and February each average about 20,000 recreation visits, less than half of July's average. September through November also stay well below the spring and early-summer highs.
For White Sands, the shape is different from a classic summer-peak park. March is the busiest month in the five-year average, while January and February are the lightest. Late summer and early fall are also lighter than the March-May spring peak.
