Reading the shape of the year.

The summer high is broad. July follows August at 98% of the peak. June averages 104,920 visits, compared with 114,970 in July. Moving within summer changes the count less than moving into spring or fall.

The edges of summer have fewer visits. May averages 32,333 visits, 28% of the peak; September averages 42,715, 36%. The busiest month has 88.8 times the visits of the quietest. That contrast does not make winter an equivalent summer sightseeing trip.

Local crowd-avoidance claims need different evidence. These figures do not rank quiet trails, separate cruise-tour groups, or measure seats left on a bus. Confirm bookings with the provider and check official conditions for any restrictions affecting your plans.

Compare months below the summer high

September falls between 30% and under 60% of the peak. May is lower, at 28%. Use the best-time guide to compare what those different seasons mean for a visit. For the full "so when should I actually go?" verdict, which weighs crowds against weather and road access, see the Denali best-time-to-visit page.

What these numbers measure

Each monthly figure is the mean recreation visits across 2021–2025 from the NPS Visitor Use Statistics Data Package, 2025. Each percentage divides that mean by this park's highest monthly mean. Visits are not unique people.

The dataset does not separate weekdays, cruise-tour arrivals, individual trails or bus departures. It compares months, not current crowd levels. We are independent of the National Park Service.
