October and November are different walking choices
The low-valley normal high falls from 108°F (42°C) in September to 93°F (34°C) in October, then 77°F (25°C) in November. Cooling down from summer does not mean the valley is already cool.
Use the forecast for your actual October dates. The monthly normal cannot separate the first week from the last. Mountain temperatures differ from the low valley, and a cooler destination still needs its own route check.
Start with stops you can keep short
At Zabriskie Point, a quarter-mile (400 m) paved uphill walk from the parking lot reaches a badlands viewpoint. At Badwater Basin, choose the pool and boardwalk before deciding whether to extend onto the salt flats. Neither needs to become a long hike to be part of the trip.
Match walking effort to the forecast and your group. Lower park-wide visitation does not establish that these particular stops will be quiet.
Build the route before counting trip days
List your must-see stops and overnight location, then check the driving route between them. A two- or three-day label alone cannot tell you whether your plan fits. Use NPS directions; remote GPS routes can be unreliable, and backcountry roads require the right vehicle and driving experience.
Before leaving, check current conditions and facility and service hours. A cooler month does not confirm that a particular road is usable.
Questions about October
Is October a good month to visit Death Valley?
It can suit a trip built around viewpoints and short stops, but the normal Furnace Creek high is still 93°F (34°C). For longer valley walks, compare November's 77°F (25°C) normal high and check the forecast before choosing your route.
Is late October cool enough for hiking?
These data describe the whole month, not late October specifically. Use a forecast for your dates and the elevation of your planned walk. A lower monthly visit count is not a hiking-condition measure.
